M&P 9 Loose Rear Sight

I've got the same problem after only 300 rounds (brand new M&P 9 Pro). After searching here I found one post suggesting it is a 2mm Allen set screw. Can anyone confirm?

As far as I know it's a 1/16th - but BEWARE, not all 1/16th allen keys are the right size, so you need a decent quality Allen Key (lots of cheapies are just the right size to strip the screw - it needs to fit tightly) and remember LocTite is your friend.

If it's metric, which I doubt it, there are half size allen keys available. Otherwise, be careful to not have some cheap set that is not quite the size it's supposed to be.

If it takes a torx key, which again, I doubt it, though someone may have replaced it with a tox, you won't find any allen key that fits properly.

Then again, the screw head may have been stripped and now, nothing will fit properly. Replace it and make sure you have the correct key for it.

enefgee, thanks.

It took literally hours of Google searching to find a few more posts that also say the rear sight set screw is a 1/16 Allen. Wow. That was harder to find than it should have been. The Smith & Wesson manual doesn't even say. I may be wrong about the 9 Pro, but many M&P's use this size screw if anyone ever loses it: # 5-40 or a metric pitched 0.6. The S&W part #108010000 is listed at 27 cents cost.

Q. Where is a good place to find Loctite 242 (Blue)? CanTire and HomeDepot do not list it online.

Or you could have gone with a quality pistol like a sig or glock and wouldn't have had this problem!!!

f:P:

anyway...I used to build RC cars and the only 1/16th allen keys I could find that wouldn't strip the head were sold in the RC stores. They are slightly oversize so it's almost impossible to strip anything with them. They're actually hex drivers, not the L shaped keys.

You'll need something like what this guy (Apex Tactical) is using. Skip to 0:35

Both stores should stock Blue Loctite. I got mine from CT.

Thanks wherermykeys, I know where you're coming from. This is what my toolbox looks like. Even still, I had no 1/16 SAE hex in there. Shocking when you think of all those pinion gear set screws that must have been about that size.

No, but if the plastic spring stirrup on your Sig breaks, you're holding a paperweight (hopefully not a loaded one that's needed). Or you could be shooting a Glock after giving it a "thorough cleaning" and have left enough lube in the striker channel to cause it to pump (no click, no bang). Or..... ALL GUNS CAN AND WILL HAVE ISSUES probably at the worst possible time, Murphy is a b*stard but it's his bus. Go put some rounds down range before contributing such cr*p - a hundred thousand or so is a good start, through 15 or 20 different guns.

In case people were scratching their heads wondering if I was showing off my bright red tool kit: No. Those stickers are old-school RC (Remote Control) Car manufacturers. An RC Car enthusiast (wherermykeys) might recognize them. That's all. As a coincidence I was first introduced to firearms over two decades ago by an RC Car buddy.

haha, I still have a TC3 and a T-Maxx sitting in my basement gathering dust!

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if I ever had a 1/16th hex driver...I just know they were really small. Logic would dictate that they were probably all metric sizes.

Confirmation:
  • The rear sight on the Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Pro Series has a set screw which needs a SAE 1/16 hex key to loosen/tighten. You can buy a set of common SAE sizes for $5 at CanTire. I bought some 30 minutes ago and the hex fit snuggly with no fear of slippage.
  • As stated already Canadian Tire does carry Loctite 242 (Blue) which I recommend for this set screw. It was in the household glues area. They have another brand of thread lock (Red) in the automotive area if you think that's a better idea.

Thanks for all the help.

I have shot several Sig and have two G17, I think M&P is a better gun. Sig is only good because the name SIG and have better fit and finish. Glock is only good for Glock guy BS over the net. I like Glock because the way it shoot and handle, not because it is better gun than the others.
