Hey I am looking to buy a 30 06 I have been looking at the savage axis but it turns out you can not get it where I am until summer . So I started looking at the 116fxp3 . What are you guys opinions on this ? any other suggestions in that price range and what all comes with one of these "packages" ? thanks!

The Marlin XL7 is an excellent choice in this category. They have borrowed every good feature from every other gun and incorporated it into a very nice, very accurate rifle. There are no packages that I am aware of, and they do not come with open sights, but at $366 (Epps - and they only have one left in stock in 30-06 according to their website) they are hard, no impossible, to beat IMO. I put my Marlin XS7 (in 7mm-08) in a Boyd's stock and it is the best rifle I own in this category. No question.
I also own a Savage Edge (now the Axis) in .308 and while it shoots very well, it is really a very low end cheaply manufactured gun IMO. For the extra cost of the scope needed with the Marlin, there is no comparison in quality or value.
I'm not sure where you are looking, but Cabela's still have the Savage Edge. I am a low-end kind of guy, but I gotta tell ya, if you are seriously going to invest $700 in a 116fxP3, then I would look at the Weatherby Vanguard. Local guy let me hold one Friday. Retail package for $689. Comes with Bushnell Banner scope, sling, Leupold rings and bases, and a hard case. Felt nice but couldn't shoot it so I can't say how that would go. However, if I was gonna throw $700 on a rifle, I'd go here, I think. Gotta be SOME Weatherby quality in it.

I bought my son a Savage 111 package in 30-06, came with a 3x9 Simmons scope mounted and borsighted at $480.00 tax in. It will shoot 1 inch or less depending on the load.

I got mine a couple weeks ago in .243 and love it. Sighted in at 200 for coyotes and just shooting off a wood block with off the shelf soft points was shooting 3 inches. I then took 3 shots at 100 m just to see where the point of impact would be and shot a 3 shot 3/4 inch group! I could play with different ammo and bullet weight or even handload for it and get even better results no doubt but it is a cheap hunting rifle so im not gonna bother.
Now that said I have had 2 Stevens 200's one in .223 the other .270 and both of them shot sub MOA as well. Best group I ever shot was with that .223 with 5 shots touching measuring .33 of an inch if I remeber correctly.
I am not really sure what I like better but I like the stock on the marlin better and it was camo for coyote shooting. That grey stock on the Stevens is in need of some paint right off the bat.
The camo Marlin is $400, but both the standard Marlin and Stevens are $350.
I looked at the cz550 carbine kevler stock model at it looks impressive. 20" barrel with open sights and 7lb. They are great quality rifle compared to some of them that was listed above. Better to spend a few more dollars than on a cheap one that the pieces fall off during your outting.

Winchester M70 Sporter (.30-06) is $699 at Wholesale Sports. Check their site if your interested. I have not held a Savage or Marlin but don't hear too many complaints. A friend has a synthetic stainless M77 that shoots really tight.
If you are on a budget and want something to build, suggest the stevens 200 for 365 at wholesale sports. Essentially same rifle with a cheaper stock, without the mag. You can take the savings and apply to a nice Boyds stock and come out pretty close to the package price. All depends on what you are after. Good choice all the same. They are real shooters out of the box. And they are great platforms for tinkering where you are handy and interested. Cheers.
Savage package in 30-06 here, changed scope with Nikon before even shot the gun - chose it due to price, accuracy and need of detachable mag - very pleased with it.
If had a little more money, I'd go with Tikka in same caliber.

My new gun came in the mail yesterday and it is a winchester 30-06. I havent shot it yet but holy crap is it nice. If you can or wish to, I'd recomend to at least taking a look at one.
