Norinco M14s Scout Scope - what's the consensus?

Is there a scout type scope that is good quality and has an illuminated reticle option? When the hunting light gets dim that red glowing dot/cross/whatever would be so easy to pick up. Not to mention the cool factor!

I wish there was a scout scope that has a mildot reticle and target knobs. It seems like a few of the guys here have been successful in using the variable long relief pistol scopes for their scout rifle. Illuminated reticle would be a very useful addition.

Has anyone had any luck with using a pistol sight as a scout scope? I'm guessing it would be a small sight picture since it's ment for pistols and low to nil magnification. But the cost compaired to an actual scout scope/IER scope would be less, correct?

You mean a pistol scope as a scout scope setup? Many have. I used one (NCstar) on my m305 and worked well. Pistol scopes generally have extended eye relief but some will work in an intermediate eye relief setting.

are they all 1x or can you get a magnified pistol scope. With regards to a Red Dot, does it have to be an IER or will any work as well?

Spearhunter-what kinda NCStar pistol scope are you using? as well as how long (how many rounds) have you used it for and does it keep your zero?

Cheers

No, mine was a 2-7x32. 1x are generally red dot scopes. With 1x there is no eye relief to clearly speak of since you can position the scope far or near. Only magnified scopes require eye relief.

I have the SPB2732B and fired about 400 rounds. Held zero fine.

A local place has the exact scope for around $50. Im gonna take a look this week!

I just finished setting up my rifle with a Burris 2-7 pistol scope. I had a Leupold scout scope but wanted more magnification. The Burris mounts in the same place as the Leupold did, with the rear of the objective about 1/2" forward of the bolt opening in the receiver. This is a lot closer than most other pistol scopes permit. BDC turrets would be nice, but the scope has a ballistic reticle which is an acceptable compromise. Scope is mounted in Warne medium height QR rings. Haven't had a chance to get it out to the range yet, but I expect it will work well since I was happy with the Leupold in the same config. Cheekweld with an Eagle strap-on cheekpad is good.

ill be trying out an older Aimpoint ML2 2x... I just need a forward rail so i can remove the ring shims and have a lower profile sight picture.

i never understand people who say "i just cant get used to a scout scope".. Basically you point your rifle and you get a magnified view of your target, with excellent periferial view.. how can you not get used to that ?

its a much better setup if you want to pick up targets quickly.

i prefer scout mounting optics over standard, unless its my target rifle, and then only because they dont make target scopes with long enough eye relief to be a scout optic

There are lower cost/quality scout optics .. NcStar and Leatherwood both have a 2-7x model with illuminated reticle.. they do stand up to the M14, but their quality is nothing like that of a Leupold..

in saying that, if you really wanted one, im sure that you could put a Leup pistol scope through the custom shop and add tactical or target turrets and a mildot reticle

I think the info you have there is wrong. I know this is right off the Bushnell website, but it doesn't make sense. All variable scopes that I have looked at have a relatively short eye relief. All of the long eye relief scopes are fixed power, i.e check out the dedicated "Scout" scopes from Burris and Leupold.

sorry mate, but you're wrong.

2-6x or 2-7x is a very common variable magnification range for scout optics and works extremely well
