Enfield Mag issue

So I just received a sporter MkIII Enfield and it's magazine doesn't want to snap into place. When I put it in and push hard on it, the mag pulls in tight to the trigger guard like it should but the catch is about 1/16" or less from catching on the magazine and holding it in place(can't see it really but its seems bloody close). Is this a common problem? Should I just file down the lip a bit until it snaps in?

Following this the mag also has a dent in one side of it. How do you remove the plunger in order to work on this since it catches on the plunger a bit?
 
How many tabs does it have on it's spine?

The first thing that comes to mind is that you have a No.4 Mk1 magazine instead of the one for the No.1 MkIII (the No.4's only have one tab.)

Also, a dent isn't a good thing to have in any mag.

To remove the plunger, push down at the rear of the plunger and then move the narrow (front part) back until it will clear the feed lips.
 
It has 2 tabs on it so its a NoIII(little spring at the bottom that sits against the trigger guard). From what I gather the no 4's just have the top lock on them.

Dicking around with it a bit more I'm thinking that its been damaged on the top of the mag as well and not just on the side at the bottom as I couldn't get the plunger out by the method you describe (which is what I tried in the first place) until I opened the metal up a bit. Closer inspection and playing with some ammunition it won't feed properly or dispense properly either. :(

So...might need a new mag for this one. Anyone have some recommendations for where to buy one from?

You won't need a new one, just a tweaking. Enfield mags are easy to bend out of shape, but just as easy to bend back into shape. Find someone with a good mag and compare the rim and lips. A little gentle tweaking with a pair of small bent nose pliers, and you'll be able to get it back in shape.

I'll try and track one down and if that doesn't work I'll have to go on to plan C. :cheers:

Last year, I aquired a No.5 without a magazine. I ordered an unmarked magazine from a collectors source and received:
First one sent: No.3 magazine
Second one sent: Another No.3 magazine
Third one sent: No.4 magazine, finally.
