I'd like to put some slim grips on my Norc 1911. Would I be able to just file down the bushings on there now? I can't seem to find a source for metric thread bushings anywhere.

I know I can tap the holes for regular bushings but I don't have a tap and die set and if I mess up the threads, I'm pretty much SOL.

According to Gunnar at ARMco, that's what they do. Email Gunnar and ask for guidance.

Mine's currently at the gunsmith getting oversize short bushings installed. The tap I purchased was a tad larger than the metric holes and would not thread, so off to the gunsmith for some drill press time.

BTB, have you attempted to remove the bushings yet? Mine were torqued down pretty darn tight:eek:

They file them down at Armco or re tap for new ones?

"geez....... for $10 you can get new slim bushings from Brownelles....."

Are you serious?

You know this for a fact?

You have done it?

If so, I'll put a stop on my gun smithing order.

I got a set last year (13 or 14 months ago)....... Brownelles brand.

As with all things on their web site, you have to dig a bit for them (I would imagine they could make it harder to find stuff there, but I'm not sure how). I found them in a catalouge and ordered them with a few other parts.

Don't forget to keep your order under $100......

I have got bushings and a lot of other things from them.. but the shipping is a lot from them they ship in huge over sized envelopes my bushings were 9.99 the shipping was 32.50

Sorry, you all missed my point. Replacement bushings for the Norc metric threads. That's the problem. Anyone solve this issue?

That seems like a bit much....... I probably would have cancelled my order!

Usually I fill up an order when I make it. I dont think I have ever paid more than $20 for shipping.... Duty on the other hand will sometimes make you gag.......

In the 3 nork's I have replaced GB in, they wern't metric.........

Which norcs were they? Are you absolutely sure? Everything I've read says they're metric. We're talking about the actual bushing thread into the frame here. I know the grip screws are fine but it's the threads in the frame that are a problem.

I've ordered a bunch of stuff from Brownells before so I'll just get them from there if they really do fit.

silly question, but why do you need to change the bushings? are they too tall for the slim grips? the bushing height from frame to tip is 4.4mm, so how thin are the grips you wanna put on?

I have a nork 1911A1 that I put some slim ones on, I got this one about 2 yr ago from Gunnar.

I have a Nork 1911A1 that I put some standard sized ones on, I also got this one from Gunnar, about 6 mo ago.

I had a NP28 (double stack 9mm) that REALLY needed a set of slim grips so I put a set on it as well, this was about 18 mo ago.

I didn't realize that the threads were supposed to be metric, so I ordered what I needed from Brownelles, I had a cranky time getting the one set of original GB off, but I didn't have a problem re-installing the 'normal' threaded GBs....

If they are actually Metric I didn't realize it...... and there is a nutter out there who's pistol is about to loose its grips!

For all of the ones I did, the Brownelles GB just screwed right in..........

Now Thumb safeties, sights, mag releases and beaver tails thats a bit of a different story.... They sometimes require some fitting.....

Thinnest I can find at Brownells is about 4mm...where have you seen 2.5mm ones? I'd like to get ones that are slim as possible.

hmm, maybe I'll just buy them and see if they fit. Maybe they're all standard threads now?

I didn't get the grips at brownelles. I can't remeber where I got them now to be honest, one of the speciality grip makers in the US, if memory serves, I paid $50 (ish) for them......

I ordered a set of brownells bushings with the oversize thread made as a replacement for stripped normal ones. They make them in slim and normal. THere is enough steel in the metric hole that the oversize tap cuts clean and will hold the replacement bushings securely. I did this with my norc commander to install slim chip mccormik grips, worked great.
