Walther P1 vs Tokarev TT33

Hi guys

Im looking at getting one of the handguns soon. I have yet to handle either of them, but Im thinking Tokarev right now since the ammo and gun are both cheaper. However, I am also thinking that the Walther may be better made since its post war production and german made. How is the accuracy with these handguns, povided the bore conditions were similar? This will be my first pistol, so I wanted to keep the cost of the gun and ammo in this ball park.

What do you guys think?
 
The P1 was made to a better quality line and uses the universally available 9mm Parabellum round. Accuracy varies with the gun, but a P1/P38 will keep a mag full within an outstretched palm @ 25 yds. Altho I've never fired a Tokarev, they certainly work. Both are now available from the retail trade in good condition and at an attractive price.

For a shooter the P1 might work out best in the long run.
 
I got a P1 as my first handgun and really enjoy shooting it and so do my friends. I have considered the TT33 but thessurplus ammo is scarce or you have to buy a crate when it is available - you also can't shoot it at most indoor ranges. I now have several other modern 9mm and only use the P1 for novelty.
 
Surplus ammo for the TT is much easier to get ahold of now and is very cheap...$110/400 rounds at Frontier Firearms. You can also buy non-surplus for a few bucks more then a box of 9mm at SFRC. Then there is reloading...you can easily get into reloading rounds for the TT saving yourself money and crafting rounds suited for your gun.

TT ammo might be it's strength and weakness at the same time.
Surpluss ammo is very cheap, and fun to shoot (that thing is accurate)but as majorca mentioned most indoor ranges will not let you use it, so you either have to reload (that's what i do) or buy factory ammo which is also hard to find from time to time, but toks population is growing and situation hopefully should change in our flavor.
 
The P1/P38 will be better made and uses readily available 9mm. The TT33 is less expensive to purchase in terms of the gun itself, but the cost and availability of ammo may be an issue at some point. Both guns are not that expensive, so I suggest buying both and doubling your fun.
 
My choice of the two would be the Walther:

-Steel jacketed bullets can't be used in many indoor ranges
-Surplus 7.62x25 ammo won't be around forever
-Reloading 9mm doesn't require case lube with carbide dies
-Nicer workmanship

Anyone ever had troubles with the P1 being a Aluminum frame?

The slides usually end up breaking before the frame. The best ones as shooters have the steel hex pin in the frame and reinforced slide. Generally speaking, P38s/P1s can't be expected to withstand the same round counts as more modern combat pistol designs, but are OK for casual target shooting given the price.
 
Definitely go with Walther P1/P38, I have several of both and I don't like the surplus 7.62x25 ammo. While it's cheap, the green lacquered one has feeding issues and the charge is too hot for civilian use. I stopped using the surplus ammo I have and strictly reload for the toks, a lot more fun.

The Walther also has SA/DA and it is a very smooth and fun gun to shoot. 9mm is available in all kind of grains and reloading is easy as you can just pick up the brass free at your range, so it's even cheaper than the surplus.
 
I've got both, but the Tok is my favourite to shoot. I have the 9mm barrel too, but have found that it only cycles well with +P or a nice stiff handload. IMHO the 7.62X25 commie surplus won't dry up for many years to come, but get some dies and components just to be safe. TradeEx has them at a very good price.
