Where to shoot 1000 yards near Edmonton?

In my opinion nothing will change until there are changes with the executive. You can keep buying people books but if they just eat the pages nothing is learned. the club should have an executive that is 100% incharge of the range and how the money is spent on upgrades not a bunch of collectors that dont go out there saying what is best for our range. CHAS needs to remember that 90% of there members are range users not collectors and it will be hard to run there gunshow without the money that comes in from range memberships.

I plan on checking out one of these meetings, more to get a clearer picture of whether my now $100 is going to help get the long range open. Doesn't look like this thread is giving it. But the fact of the matter is that, like many I hold a range pass there for one reason, LONG RANGE SHOOTING. The fact is most people hold a range pass for a reason, to allow usage of that range. Not so that they can make all the problems into solutions. No long range, no range pass for me. IMO

This is what I have been saying. It is the old boy's club and nothing will change.

The last CHAS meeting focused on upgrading the Genesee pistol range as the top priority to ensure CHAS pistol owners (shooters?) are compliant in being members to a licensed gun (pistol) range as required under the CFA.

They also discussed the LR facility issues from the RFO, municipality, layout, safety, a**hole members (or not?) shooting signs/breaking rules (and bringing heat to the facility), etc. Volunteers, and specifically heavy equipment, and some serious effort on behalf of the executive and vounteers will be required to get the LR facility to where it needs to be (new layout (if possible?) and sightline sloping down (vs. current up) to 500-700 m targets, along with higher berms, etc.). However, that discussion concluded with the CHAS executive proposing a census of members to determine what facilities they use most so they can prioritize what additional upgrades will be done, and when, or if at all, to best serve CHAS member interest.

I guess this goes back to members attending the monthly meetings, and hopefully find volunteers, and perhaps a few dedicated individuals that would lead a fresh executive that will best serve the needs of the LR shooters. That is assuming the membership demographic supports the LR shooting, and perhaps not so much collecting.

I left before the show and tell w:h:, so who knows what other issues came up:rolleyes:

you should start a new thread for that Q

were talking about an edmonton range here and how its run badly.

I just want to be clear, I started this thread to find place to do 1000 yard shooting while Genesse is closed. It did not begin as a criticism of the range, but turned out that way as most suggestions for shooting long range were Genesse. With the awareness out now about how important the long range facility is, maybe we have stirred up some interest and support to help our club grow.

An off thought, what about making Genesee its own private club and separating it from CHAS. Then the revenue generated would be from actual users and the collectors wouldnt be able to interfere? Not sure if that is a good idea or not, but figured id throw it out there. Maybe run it as an actual business with employees/owners and profits, then there might be a little less politics getting things moving and a little more motivation to get it done quickly and correctly. Dont want to start a big argument about this though, just thinking out loud.

Sorry how rude of me.

what I should have said was " This thread was hijacked once already and we are talking about an Edmonton range and how it is run badly."

Hey man , Genesee will get back up. dont worry. They actually are the best long range up here. Unfortunately this is the internet. However once word is out things are rolling people will be very happy and word will spread again.... but in a more + way.

Schecter, that is a very good point. Run it as a business, hold shooting clinics, charge a fee for any organization that want to use the range for the day or weekend etc. First off, The club needs new board members that are advid shooters.
Just a thought, You sound like you have a lot of business experience. Any thought of run??

I dont know if I have a whole pile of business experience, I would like to consider it mostly common sense and drive. Professionally I do manage my division of a drilling fluids company for Western Canada as a technical account manager, but again, I got there with common sense. I have thought about running to get on the board, but my job takes me travelling a fair bit and I dont want to short change the members. I would like to get involved where I can and help though. The pres and another board member have contacted me and we plan on getting together when I get back from the US. Thanks for all the support and if all the members who value the long range band together, we will have no reason not to have a top notch facility.

Cheers

No worries AKD, I just didnt want the board getting the wrong idea about this thread. If we can keep the tone positive and supportive, I think we will see more results than just complaining. As other members have posted, we need to get involved if we want change. This is the beginning of me getting involved past range cleanups.

I'm not Jeff. I'm the president. I assist Jeff in completing the memberships on a regular basis. I know that all memberships received have been sent out as soon as completed. If your friend has not received his membership in that long a time span, it did not get from Milarm to Jeff.

Have your friend contact me directly (contact CHAS President on our website email link: www.chas.ab.ca) & I will see if I can find out where his application was 'lost'. It may have been processed, but be lacking info we need in which case it's sitting waiting for him to contact us or arrange to pick it up.

I don't know where he lives, but there have been several in the last few years that were 'lost in the mail' in Leduc county. I have personally mailed several of them only to need to mail replacement cards by registered mail or deliver them in person.

Useless, I e-mailed over 2 weeks ago..... and nothing. It's unfortunate. I just got a range membership somewhere else. I wonder how many people have done the same thing.... If the long range berms get fixed I might just try (keyword try) to get a range membership there.
