What kind of speeds are you guys getting out of your 178gn Amax loads ?

My best load is with 42.5gn varget pushing 2530 average fps.

Gun is a 700 5R 24" barrel.

Im asking because when i first did my ladder test I saw this node and stuck with it. never went higher. Im just wondering if anyone is shooting the same but faster or what the average is ?

sub moa but this is only @ 500m

ya its a good group forsure, I would just like it to be a bit faster for 1k.

I gota say as well, ive yet to put it on paper past 500m. longest ive gone with this round was 800m and that was a 15" gong so .... that was not really telling me much.

just wondering what speeds others with a roughly 24" barrel pushing 178 Amax are getting.

With my T-3 Tacticals and 24" barrels, I was getting 2700+ using BL-C2 powder. I found them to be an exceollent bullet to make work.

interesting. what kind of gn charge are you using?

I might half to give it a try. Ever try 748? find it the same at all?

Ive never looked for Hodgdon BL-C(2). Is its usually available at most gun stores?

I jumped on the varget band wagon but I always liked ball power way more for how easy it is in the trickler.

2600 on the nose in 10 deg C with 44 gr Re-15 out of Lapua brass; Win brass tends to run about 2550.

-15 is usually a couple bucks more than Varget, but I'm a convert after the results I've been getting out of a heavy sporter barrel Mod 70.

2640 fps average with 44.2 gr. Varget out of a 22" barrel and 1/2 moa groups all day long at 220 feet above sea level, much faster at 3250 feet of elevation here in Alberta, If I remember correctly I think I picked up 5 MOA in ele.

Cheers

AKD, nice to see you on another post. I am running my Savage 10FP with a 24in barrel using the 178 amax, Lapua Brass, CCI primers (not benchrest), OAL of 2.824 (10 thou of lands) with 44.7 grains of Varget. It is compressed, but with the Lapua brass I am seeing no pressure signs. Quick Load says I am getting 2684 fps at 62k psi. It is a 104.5% load. I also shoot the 180 Nosler Accubond with great groups seated out at 2.860 with 45.3g at 107% and 67k psi with 2725fps. The amax are grouping consistantly .3 at 200m and the Accubonds are consistantly under .5 at 200m. Let me know if you have any more questions. I shot SMK 168 175, Nosler BT 165, 168, 180 Accubond and Berger 155VLD. I have tried IMR 4064, IMR 4895, RL15 and Varget. RL15 meters best and gives me about 60fps more velocity with the same charge and yields the same groups. I bought 10 lbs of Varget though and am working through it.

I also have a Remington 700SPS with the 20in barrel and it seems to like the 168 Nosler BT a little better.

I am using Quickload, but I have used those velocities to input into my Nightforce Ballistics program and they are dead on out to 800m. I am planning to get a chrono to start looking at my ES and SD, but so far I am pretty happy with my results. Maybe I could have gotten there with a few less rounds though. I should have mentioned that I have used those velocities with the Nightforce (Exbal) Ballistics calculator. I have done a lot of tuning in QL to make sure it is as accurate as possible such as weighing and measuring my bullets and brass including water volumes to get the closest estimates.

All my loads are fireformed to my chamber so I get a little extra volume, not much. I am on my 4th loading without resizing or any stretching or pressure signs.

As a size note, with 43.5g of RL15 I stuck my bolt using Federal brass, that was why I switched to Lapua. Now all my caliber choices revolve around if Lapua makes brass for it or can be sized to it. My first full build will be a .284 on the Badger short action for the 162 amax.

Cheers

Obtunded,

Are you supplying any prefit Savage Barrels? If not how much to rebarrel my 10FP? I have been thinkin about converting it to the .284 to test out the short action before investing in a full build. I am really set on the Badger action, but it is only short, win magnum, and lapua mag sizes, No standard Long.

Do I really need to worry about throat erosion with a 7mm wsm as much as everyone leads me to believe? Last season I put 1500 rounds through my .308 so barrel life is an issue.

Cheers

I've tried and haven't had very good results in my R700 and Savage; I always go back to Varget or Benchmark for the bolt guns. My custom R700 that'll group at 1/2 MOA all day long couldn't do less than 1 MOA with H4895. My M1A on the other hand loves 42gr of H4895 and the 155gr A-Max with a CCI BR2, and Lapua brass. It'll do 1 MOA with that load.

Anyone using IMR4895 or H4895 with these?

I was always under the pre-tense that the 155gr. Amax were a better bullet for 400 yards +...

I found my OCW by shooting ladders at 200m with .3 grain increments. It was really apparent with my Savage but less so with my R700. I was also looking at Chris Long's theory on dwell time in the barrel and it seems to hold reasonably true for my savage but the weight of the bullet changes the optimum time in barrel for some reason.

178gn Amax and IMR 4895

This is my only load with Hornady 178gn bullets, I really liked them in my M14. This is a heavy bbl with a 1:10 twist so I wanted to take advantage of the heavier bullets. This load was designed with quickload to keep the pressures similar to a standard M14 load using a 168gn SMK and IMR 4895. The Mvel is chrono measured value, the pressure is estimated from quickload.

This was the best shooting bullet in this rifle, I have a load with Lapua 167gn Scenars that is close to this.
