Best muzzle brake for the Norc M14?

Looks like were both Leo promoters.

LOL yep, good on ya promoting Canadian Mfg's.

I plan on only purchasing Canadian made products unless I absolutely don't have a choice. There sure is some kick asss stuff comming out of Canada these days.

The old M14 will as black as death itself and more kung fu than Chucky Norris.:D

(I know, nothing is more Kung Fu than Norris)

Roger that, Im all about promoting Leo's work. there is definitely less felt recoil adn muzzle rise with his break than with the stock three prong that came on the rifle. His work is top notch, I dont think i would sell the rifle he put together for me for any amount of money. And hes one hell of a great guy, a quick trip to pick up parts always turns into a couple hours of hanging out at Leo's house.

The purpose of starting this thread is because I'm getting my barrel chopped by Dlask this week and I was curious what options I had. I don't have a muzzle brake (yet) to replace the original Norc that's already on the beast.

My question is, if the gunsmith threads the newly cut barrel and installs the old frontsight/muzzle brake on for now, is it a different thread then the common aftermarket muzzle brakes out there, or can I just unscrew the old one and pop on a new one?

He has his standard XB3 for the .308 that he could install, but I'm not a huge fan of the looks. ... Unless those with it installed can give me feedback on it's performance.

Thanks again for the useful help and comments :)

Answer : If you have the original flash hider on your rifle it is held in place by splines cut into the barrel and by the castle nut. When you switch it to an aftermarket muzzle brake the barrel is threaded to 28 x 1/2 in threads to match up with the aftermarket brake.

SA makes a muzzle brake with the splines inside so it is a direct replacement for your original flash hider.....but if you want to use it after the chop it will have to be reamed out and threaded on the inside

I've installed few smith coast guard brakes now that where threaded 1/2 x 28 and .30 cal bore so no reaming needed. they were sent in by customers and where not m14 brakes..... perhaps AR10? but where engraved with the sei markings.

you will need a 1/2 x 28 muzzle device if joe is cutting your barrels at dlask...... as anything in the 5/8 diameter thread range will not work at the 18.5" barrel diameter at the muzzle. several guys have had me install the pws inspired brake they have at dlask..... but haven't seen anyone post reviews yet.

PWS? is that the XB3?

So to recap (in newbie terms):

When I get the barrel chopped, I can put the stock m14 muzzle brake back on as a temporary fix without messing up the barrel. Then when I get my SA muzzle brake, I can get a gunsmith to thread the barrel and install it with no problem... Correct?

Duke878,

By "stock m14 muzzle brake" are you referring to the original flash hider? Not sure if you already have a brake on your uncut barrel. If you shorten the barrel, the outside diameter increases. This means whatever you had installed on the tip of your uncut barrel now won't fit unless it's been re-bored.

let me explain this fully
you will notice , looking at the standard un cut barrel, with the flash hider removed, that it is sitting on a surface that is larger than the barrel diameter. This allows for the thread and splineways for an m14 flah hider or brake that use the castlenut to retain it on the barrel. Smith enterprise direct connect devices also fit this muzzle detail, however only on american made barrels as the thread is different from chinese to US rifles.

now, when we cut the barrel down, regardless of length, say anywhere between gas sytem and muzzle, in our case 18.75" , the diameter is "smaller" than the original flash hider mounting surface.

I have seen some 18.5' barrels where a very competent machinist/lathe operator has milled the splineways and recreated the standard flash hider mounting details. However due to liabilty issues, most folks will not do this modification due to the fact that the thread will be undersize in diameter.

so in my professional opinion, it is unwise to go that route.

so we use the safe 1/2 x 28 thread on the 18.75" barrels , one reason because it works and 2 there is a tonne of muzzle devices for 1/2 x 28 and many of them in 30 cal already.
I have also noticed with a great many aftermarket devices guys have sent in to be installed..... most of them have inner diameters that clearance for .30 cal anyways, and most again , are easily reamed out if need be.

at least 2 manufacturers i am aware of are busy working on muzzle devices for the 1/2 x28 m14 barrels that encorporate a front sight solution..... I have no details for you but it will be exciting to see what they come up with.

so if you go the shorty route..... 1/2 x 28 is the thread for whatever you decide to screw on the end

Thanks for the elucidating explanation M14Doc. So, if I install a brake onto my uncut barrel now, how much work is required so that I can still use the same brake if I chop off the barrel? Cheers.

Here's the second brake I mentioned by Leo Cormier installed on an M14

Here is another rifle by Leo with a modified Smith brake;

Here is an M14 in 22-250 with his custom brake on it;

And he has one with the Smith brake. He is replacing the Smith brake and selling it... :eek:

Any news on the Dlask brake that uses the origional front sight dovetail? Mines being chopped and threaded as we speak. I want the same front sight configuration. I don't like the HK style gas block one.

Was at dlask yesterday, they are RnD'ing a couple options. I was able to get them a couple barrels to use for compatability testing and shared my thoughts on the topic.
We'll have to wait n see what they come up with
