Where to shoot 1000 yards near Edmonton?

X2.

If you think you can start a profitable outdoor shooting range in the Edmonton area and run it as a business, then why don't you do so? Obviously from all the comments here there is a demand for such. Of course that would also take a lot of work which a lot of people here are clearly averse to doing as they just want to be able to shoot with no hassles or restrictions but not have to contribute to maintaining a range facility. Or start your own club and open your own range facility and you can do whatever you like.

There is a lot you don't understand about operating a range including local land use zoning restrictions and federally imposed range facility requirements that you are not going to learn by reading the absurdly misinformed opinions and myths that are perpetuated here (for example, the idiotic suggestion that CHAS is run by "collectors" who don't care about the range). Again I say come to the meetings, gain an understanding of the intricacies and realities of running an organization and a range facility, learn what the issues are and participate in the club and the decision making and you will have a say in club affairs including the future of the range. But if you don't participate, please DON'T complain.

I didnt post the idea of a private range for a flaming, it was just a suggestion. Im not totally sure why there are a few guys who are flying of the handle about criticisms, hopefully this thread will raise awareness and benefit the club. While there are people who continually make excuses about the state of the range and get fired up when someone comments on it, nothing will change. THat is kind of the point of this. To be very honest I would start a range in a heart beat if I could get land. THe only real overhead to the range is land. CHAS already has it and it has huge potential to be a great facility with a little care and attention. Im sorry if you are personally insulted when we show our disappointment in the current facilities, why there are people who are taking it so personally I dont know. There are a few basic things that need to be done and probably some policy changes to make this a top notch facility. I think the members deserve it. Sadly, when you opt to become a board member, you take on the responsibility and will be subject to both the criticism and the praise. Would you like to be apart of the praise once it is done? I dont mean to completely segregate you for your comments because there have been a couple other people as well, but I dont understand the hostility.

I also dont understand the responses about members not getting their memberships. That seems like a fair complaint unless you dont mind handing over 100 dollars to a stranger for nothing in return. I was one of the members whos application got "lost" It took many phone calls and some aggravation but in the end Randy vouched for me after taking my money and Jeff got me looked after. There is definitely info falling through the cracks and when money is changing hands, it needs to be rectified.

Beefman,
Please stop talking down to people who are paying to get memberships and not receiving them when all they want is the membership they have paid for. The attitude is not deserved and how do you expect someone who hasnt even received a membership card to get involved at the facility. To treat new members this way is a disgrace. If you want a private boys club maybe you are in the wrong place.........or we are. Telling members with a legitimate complaint to "cry me a river" is an extremely poor attitude and I sure hope you arent representative of our club. It would be nice to think the majority of us wouldnt treat new members like such a douche. Please show a little restraint and class and we can all get along and help get things going.

your breaking my heart ..not ...ppl like you who like to complain about everything and do nothing to help .. IF everyone helped out just a little we all be happy .. .. so go cry me a river

Really?? Did this just happen? Very mature.... It's ok, you've only made a fool of yourself.
How do you suggest I help out and join a gun club where I don't have a membership? I simply said I was interested and never got any type of replies..... I am not a member. I sure would like to be and then perhaps I can "help" out if need be but it sure makes it difficult to participate and "help" out when I can't even get any info or replies on getting a membership.

Useless, I e-mailed over 2 weeks ago..... and nothing. It's unfortunate. I just got a range membership somewhere else. I wonder how many people have done the same thing.... If the long range berms get fixed I might just try (keyword try) to get a range membership there.

this is why I wrote that .. they bail ship .. I too had a short issue with not getting my membership .. but I sent off an e-mail or two and got it ..yes there was a small problem ..sorry if I offened anyone ..

we all need stick together and get the range up and running for all of us .. myself I'm not a long range shooter at the moment , but I'd like to it to be there when I advance my skills as a shooter ..

Well said. We do need to stick together and participate. Once I get a membership I hope to help out any way I can. Don't worry about the offending part, this is the internet and we all get a little edgy every now and again.

What's so idiotic about that. I don't think any of the executives would deny that they are gun collectors and if any one of them cared about the long range it wouldn't be shut down right now would it?

Lets face it, the genesse range sucks and it's the people in charge that let it get that way. Nothing will change until they do!

the range is what it is .. it could use some improvements .. but I still like it .. I also use the Sherwood Park Fish & game range .. it has been going through upgrades too .. the genesse range will get there too in time with our help

I like having more than one range to go too ..some where different to go to from time to time :sniper:.. if we all could bring a pail of dirt to the range we be that much closer to reopening the 200 to 700 meter ranges ...lol .. ok maybe 2 pails ...lol

It is 3 hrs from Edmonton, however Nose Hills Gun Club goes out to 1100 yds. Very nice facility. I live 15 minutes from there. Please feel free to contact me for Doug Lee's phone #, he takes care of memberships.

The last CHAS meeting focused on upgrading the Genesee pistol range as the top priority to ensure CHAS pistol owners (shooters?) are compliant in being members to a licensed gun (pistol) range as required under the CFA.

They also discussed the LR facility issues from the RFO, municipality, layout, safety, a**hole members (or not?) shooting signs/breaking rules (and bringing heat to the facility), etc. Volunteers, and specifically heavy equipment, and some serious effort on behalf of the executive and vounteers will be required to get the LR facility to where it needs to be (new layout (if possible?) and sightline sloping down (vs. current up) to 500-700 m targets, along with higher berms, etc.). However, that discussion concluded with the CHAS executive proposing a census of members to determine what facilities they use most so they can prioritize what additional upgrades will be done, and when, or if at all, to best serve CHAS member interest.

I guess this goes back to members attending the monthly meetings, and hopefully find volunteers, and perhaps a few dedicated individuals that would lead a fresh executive that will best serve the needs of the LR shooters. That is assuming the membership demographic supports the LR shooting, and perhaps not so much collecting.

I left before the show and tell w:h:, so who knows what other issues came up:rolleyes:

What percentage of the 1000 members are avid long range shooters? I am a former member that used the range a whole bunch a few years ago and other than Mut's shoot, folks practicing for it, the 400 and longer ranges were seldom used. FS

More and more ppl shoot long range every year when I started shooting there the 600 and 700m berms were seldom used but the popularity is getting bigger everytime I'm out there.
