New Encore Pro-Hunter questions

The talley's sure look good, I wish I would have considered them for my encore. Instead I put on a set of Leupolds. Not easy to set up properly.( had to get a "Level, level, level kit). Took a lot of lapping to get them smooth! I chose them because I had a gift card to get rid of. Maybe not the best reason to buy something.

They are holding well on my mild recoiling 25/06.

Talley's do look good. Do you spin them around to put the rings fore and aft a bit?

Here is Starpuss' EGW hand off on my 50cal Katahdin muzzleloader BUT with Burris Zee rings. They give a better (not perfect) bite on the base. The scope is a BSA deer hunter 2.5x with looong eye relief. Hammer spur is behind ocular which I like. Shoots accurate - no fussiness at all - all business. A 2.5x Leupold fixed is planned for - though the BSA is working well.

no, you can mount them only one way. that one you have there looks much better to me then the 4 ring set up. the 4 ring set up just isn't my cup of tea i guess. to each there own i guess.

I do like Talley, I've got them on most of my bolt guns but for the Pro-Hunter I'm thinking QD rings. I already have thousands of dollar tied up in scopes on my other rifles, I don't want to tie a bunch more on Encore barrels. I'm looking for Weaver base on the barrels and QD rings on a scope to switch between them. I like the MGM Custom base in SS. I think I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Just for comparison, here is my Pro Hunter with one piece Leupold Quick Release (QR) base and rings. If I remember right they are medium rings. The scope is a 50mm objective lens allows just enough room.

Oh and for lots of great info on Thomspon Encore/Pro-Hunter check out Mike Bellm's website.

i like the look of this base. maybe i'd try one of those on my 22-250 barrel instead of the talley base. can you tell me how much they quote you on that base when you get in touch with them. i really want to change the whole set up on that barrel. it has all the cheapo leupy rileman base and rings with a cheap tasco. would like to upgrade the whole optics situation on that frame and barrel. and i'm noticing for the first time that my pro hunter frame dosen't have the overtravel screw like my older encore frame. i had never noticed it before, never really payed much attention too it. wasen't that your first question in this thread! LOL.
i guess we took it a little off topic.....

The MGM base are $40 blued and $45 stainless on their website. I like the fact that they are made by a company that specialize in TC barrels and accessories. Pretty decent, shipping will be the deciding factor. I'll post the price they quote me. Now I need two of them, I snagged a .243 Win barrel on EE yesterday.:D

once you start buying barrels, you just can't seem to help yourself!!!!

I just finished drilling, and taping my encore trigger guard for an over travel screw. I read that it was supposed to be a 4-40 set screw which are hard to come by.

I just put in a 6-32 and it works great. Took up a lot of the slack in the trigger.

Pretty nervous with the tap though.

Because in your mind you tell yourself that you're getting a new rifle for a couple hundred bucks. How can you beat that?

I just use Weavers. I've had good luck with them.

There's a few people that had asked about an update on the price for the MGM base. Finally contacted them, they won't ship to Canada or even to a US address once they know it will end up in Canada.

So I ordered basically the same base from w ww.strattoncustom.com. From what I've read on other sites, MGM and Stratton Custom are owned by the same family, two brothers if I recall. $58 for the SS base and only $7 shipping via USPS.

What do you mean??
The EGW bases have oversized cross slots - far wider and deeper than standard weaver bases. From memory I think the EGW pictinny slots are .170" wide but regular Weaver slots are .140" wide ( I didn't go and measure them again for this response so the dimensions may be a little off due to my poor memory - but not off by much I think). Just looking at the base you can see the great huge Picatinny slots versus the far more petit Weaver base slots. The Weaver rings can't get enough bite on the edge either - hanging on by a small amount.

The bottom line is standard Weaver rings don't fit well on EGW Encore picatinny base - particularly if using anything with any significant recoil.

I just mounted Leupold PRW Rings(which are weaver cross-bolt style) on my new Marlin SBL w/ Supplied XS Pictinny Rail.
Noticed Some play when we installed them, but just simply pushed them forward while tightening them down.
Sure hope they will be fine!!

As said before in the thread.

Mike Bellum is the answer to all your questions.

I have a 300 win mag barrel for mine that will now shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards all day long. Thanks to Mike. Mine had serious headspace issues.
I also have a 50 cal BP barrel that I never shoot. Sits in the corner of the gun room.
The TC's are ok. But they definately require mikes knowledge to make them good guns.
Would I buy another ProHunter.......NO would I sell it if a new gun came along?.....maybe lol.

They are milspec picatinny..smaller slots are called Weaver..thus the reason some rings will not fit. A Weaver ring will work just fine on a pic rail.

Will be just fine..thats exactly how to do it.

Not just fine on a EGW picatinny if heavy recoil - though will hang on enough if recoil is modest.

Wonksy - the PRW may fit far better than standard Weaver - that is to say reach down more to get more grip on the base edges. Hope so.
