Heard a hunter calling in deer today on the wooded property behind my house, I suspect its the owner or his buddy, season closed 18 days ago! Should I call on this poacher? How far would a bow hunter have to hunt from my house to be legal? There are a lot of houses backing onto this wooded area. Thanks

Calling deer is not illegal. Hunting them out of season IS. If season is closed, doesn't matter how far from his house or your house he is... If he's hunting, he's a poacher, and you should call it in.

Just because someone is calling doesn't mean they are poaching. they might be practing their calls? Why don't you go over and talk to him instead of calling him in?

DON'T ASSUME...it seems like too many people jump at the chance to play the "hero" and report and stop a possible crime. We all hate it when some soccer mom calls 911 on us cause she hears gun shots in the woods...cause you know thats were gangs have their turf wars!!!

Check the regs, here in Sask :

Hunting includes taking, wounding, killing,
chasing, pursuing, worrying, capturing,
following after or on the trail of, searching
for, shooting at, trapping, setting snares for,
stalking or lying in wait for any wildlife,
whether or not the wildlife is subsequently
captured, wounded or killed.

See what your regs are, most likely they are not within the law, make the call to the CO's.

Great reply.

I'd be careful approaching someone , not telling what they are up to. Hope for the best expect the worst. This is why we pay our taxes , let the wildlife enforcement figure it out for ya. Just safer for you. If it is someone actually poaching, what is gonna stop them from from doing something to you if they are already breaking the law? Like others have said you cannot assume, but that is a two way street.

I have tried out calls in my yard, which is pretty big. How do you know that he isn't just in his backyard, or a little bit into the bush trying out a new call he just got? Don't phone the CO on him without knowing all the facts. What did he ever do to you? If he isn't going to shoot a deer, I wouldn't consider that hunting. Don't screw this guys life up.

I don't see anything on that list that would stop you from calling deer.

ask your neighbor what they were up to, perhaps they are trying to take pictures

Cause someone is gonna shoot you cause they MIGHT be hunting out of season and the "DON'T WANNA GO BACK TO THE BIG HOUSE"!!! I'd def commit the lesser crime of murder or argravated assult rather then face poaching charge...IF thats what he was doing.

You don't have to sprint over as soon as you hear the calls but you can stop by and just say hey...might even make a new hunting friend :O. Why does everyone seem to think/hope for the best on this forum?

If you are SURE he's actually hunting call MNR/CO. Poaching is wrong one way or the other. Confronting him will ensure that life is hard as long as he is a neighbour.

I heard him call for deer all fall 4-5 times a week, his stand is directly behind my property, its not his backyard. And its not one of my nieghbors, they are total non-hunters. I'm not scared to confront him, if he is there tommorow I will give him heck.

What to do in this situation

......... Do Nothing............

Precisely. We make it other people's business our own and later complain when we are ourselves treated the same.

To those who think about just turning the neighbor in for assumed law breaking.... you forgot the essential idea of being neighbourly. Sure am glad you're not mine.

Listen, its not my nieghbor! I know he's bow hunting back there, I'm going to politly tell him deer season is over, should do the trick. Its a friend of land owner. I have seen him come and go during season with his bow. This area is only about 5-6 acres and surrounded by homes.

I have to laugh at what's in the Hunters and Trappers guide. I spend a lot of time before the season opens walking, stalking etc. just as if I was hunting. The only difference is I'm hauling a tripod and a video camera so that I can get a more accurate gross score.. If I ever had a CO try to call me a poacher when I wasn't carrying a gun I'd laugh in his face...

Hell I usually start video taping and doing it all again as soon as the seasons close as to know what areas to walk the following spring for sheds and summer to spot!
