Well I've decided to join the ranks of the CZ crowd! I've narrowed my choice to the 452 american , 16" or the 452 varmint,22.5 " heavy contour. I can get either for the same price locally so I was just wondering what your opinions are for each one. It's just for targets and the occasional ground hog .

Pick the one you like best you can't go wrong with either.and by the way the varmint has a 20' barrel .the standard american is 22.5"

I agree with Rod B.

If I were buying now, I'd get the 16 inch American first. It will shoot well at the range as well as be much handier in the field due to its shorter length and lighter weight.

A 16 inch barrel is ideal for the .22LR as bullet velocity is maximized if that is important for you.

Bullet dwell time is shorter in the 16 incher than the 20 incher and this should mean less time for inaccuracy due to barrel movement. Of course it can be argued the bull barrel on the Varmint will have reduced vibration and whipping.

Research has shown that accuracy for the 16 inch American and 20 inch Varmint are very similar. Just decide how much weight or lack of weight is right for you.

I already have a Varmint (19 inch barrel bought in 2002) and a Style (nickel finish with 22 inch tapered barrel like the American, but with a synthetic stock). If I had the choice then, I would have gotten a 16 inch American first.

For field use I'd buy the American.

For target go with the Varmint. Heavier barrel & the stock has the wider fore end which is better from a rest.

Disagree. I use the Varmint's strictly in the field with no problems at all. That's why they are called " Varmint ". For Varmint hunting.

What you say is true.

And the "American" is for hunting Americans?:D Just kidding, bro.

Seriously, the 16 inch American is a recent entry in the CZ line and worth looking into as a handier alternative to the Varmint. If the accuracy is the same as a Varmint, why lug around an extra lb or more? I also like the proportions of the 16 incher. So cute.

I'm not saying the American is not a good gun. I'm just saying that the Varmint is an excellent gun in the field and is what I use personally with great success. You can't go wrong with either.

I didn't say the Varmint was too heavy or unsuitable for hunting, I am sure it is a fine hunting gun.

I meant to emphasize that the heavier weight & the wider forend give it an advantage when shooting off a rest on the bench. I found the American I had as compared to a friend's Varmint more difficult to shoot from a rest.

choices

I have several of the 452's including one of the 16 inch models. A finer rifle is only the Full Stock product. I put a little Leupold 2-7 on top, mighty fine in the accuracy dept. FS

Varmint owner checking in! If I was standing and shooting as in silhouette, I would probably lean towards the American.

But with a Bipod, Millet TRS-1 50mm scope, I prefer to be prone or benched while shooting the little gophers.
