Our Coyotes F**ked the Wolves

My bad on the shot size  An increase in the "reward" certainly wouldn't hurt. Apparently the 22-250 is a favourite of poachers as it has the capability to take big game yet legal to carry with only a coyote licence. So big game poachers already have the loop hole looked after. Too bad they won't permit 7.62x39 then I'd actually have a practical purpose for the SKS :)

Not quite. With a coyote license, the maximum is .225, but you can use any other smaller centrefire, including, .17 Remington or .204 Ruger for example. And with shotguns, the shot size has to be No.2 or larger.

We (the Newfoundland & Labrador Wildlife Federation) have been lobbying for more latitude in the calibers permitted, so that we are more like most of the other provinces, but its an uphill battle. Especially as some folks had (and continue to have, I expect) the rather flawed logic that if larger calibers were allowed, people would use them to poach big game. (Never mind that anyone inclined to poach will use whatever they have at hand).

As for the 'bounty', the $25 carcass reward is not technically a bounty, as the carcasses are being collected for science. There is a fair bit of resistance to increasing the reward, and I am doubtful that it would serve any real value in ultimately curtailing coyote populations in any event.

I'd carry an SKS with it. If it ends up turning around and one stalks me, I want to pop off as many rounds as I can into the bugger.

I would consider investing in a Kevlar suit in case one of those super yote's breaks through the firing line and you have to engage in hand to paw combat.

If they are as big as stated i wouldn't go out after them with anything less than a 300Mag. and maybe a shotgun over the shoulder for back up.

if i was in sask, i'd be thinking of a 6 inch GUN- or 155 if you prefer- it's not the animal, but the RANGE, and the killing power down range- and the 6 inch has a SPHERE OF INFLUENCE on contact, so you get the whole pack

Help!! My house is surrounded by man-eating Coyotes! They often stalk me as I run from the house to my truck and we are afraid to let the dog out for a pee.
In Manitoba the buggers are so big that it is considered unsafe to go after them with less than an '06.

Man the yotes here are big, I shot one with the 06 last fall while moose hunting, It was the size of a German Shepherd and tipped the scales at 72 lbs. If I find the pic i will post it.

Remington. They seem like they are built pretty well, but I want a bit more accuracy than I think those can produce. Someone with one please feel free to correct me...

No problems with accuracy, the 16" 9 twist barrel easily groups under 1" with the right hand loads. Very reliable as well. That one is wearing a 1.5-5 illuminated reticle. Its my goto rifle for night time predator action. I also have a 275 lumen light and 20mw green laser for it.. Having 10 rds on board is usefull to.

Any of these should get the job done... 220 Swift would be my choice...

Ok, now the Newf's have giant coyotes? Blaming it on wolves eh? Does dees newfyotes howls wits a founy accent? Den I's tinks dare may be some lonely woodcutters involved I do. lol

I bought a book this summer Called "the Newfoundland Coyote" a Bit of information there. They are big, about two years ago while moose hunting I saw five on a marsh. amazing to watch, but never had a hope in hell at hitting one, same for the moose. Since they moved off there's more moose than ever but rabbits are almost few and far between. From what I heard from various sources they interbread with Grey Wolves, probably in Ontairio. As far as I know your only aloud .22 centerfire unless you have a big game license and you can shoot them with the same firearm your using for that. My advice get yourself a nice .22-250 with good optics pray for snow, track them down with your ski-doo and have at em.

I don't have a Skidoo and this year we barely had any snow. Although I say this kind of hypocritically, as we are supposed to get 40 cm tommorrow night!
