Soooo after some serious research and input from my fellow CGNers i went out this morning and picked up a Remington 700 5Rmilspec in .308.. the rifles main purpose will be for gong smashing from 750-1000yds and probably further (depends if i wanna do that much walking hahaha) and for teaching a few friends who are interested in shooting longer distance

the plans will be
- 20MOA rail (input? brand and CGN dealer to contact?)
- scope well im rather undecided at this point, like i said its just gonna be a gong smasher so it wont be S&B or NF thats for sure haha

will probably have it bedded and action trued, there is a local gunsmith who specializes in 700 series

any other input will be greatly appreciated, as in my thread when i started to look into the 700s , they are foreign territory to me

Nice grab. Base farrel or near or something like that. As for gunsmith you are in luck. Guntech is not only one of the kings of the 700. He is in the Vic area!
 
yeah im pretty happy i decided to grab it, should make for a fun time haha!

yeah i grew up just around the corner from Dennis, iv heard his name around for years, now i actually have a reason to pay him a viset lol.. that and im taking my .338wm in for a muzzle break will be picking his brains for sure on this one!
 
They are a nice rifle, I have been kicking around the idea of getting one as well. Bed the action, tune the trigger, and mount a 20moa rail (Mystic carries Farrel rails) and bang away.

I would take a serious look at a sightron. They have about the most MOA adjustment available which you will need of you want to reach wayyyy out there and the prices will not break the bank. A fixed power SIII has a pile of adjustment and runs around $600.
 
LB, thats i will deff take a look at the sightron i was hoping to be under a grand for the scope (my idea of a budget build :S ) but am open to any thing, tho i am a fan of adjustable power

AKD - haha thanks! u were right about the trigger it breaks soooo nice and clean... looking forward to having this thing built up.. but realistically its put it in the gun safe and buy things when i can sorta deal :(
 
Well that was a mistake, next will be expensive optics, thinking about a different stock, thinking about what else you can do to make it more accurate, maybe build a custom rifle... Then you'll release that the 5Rs come in different calibers...

See you're in Victoria - Guntech did the crown, trigger & bedding on our assortment of 5Rs (.223 & .308 in B&C 2094 stocks and a .308 in original stock) and am very pleased. Enjoy yours.

now for the most newb Remington question ever , the .308 is short action correct? im sure it is but i dont wanna brain fart and order the wrong MOA base
 
thank you sir! i was pretty damn sure it was but some times i really dont know whats goin on in my own brain... i took a good whack to the noggin when i was a kid and some of the intelligence leaked out lol

I can confirm the sick lookingness. Over Christmas I had an ATRS stainless rail put on a .223 variant. It is, indeed, sick. Next you'll need stainless rings, for which I've found two suppliers. PM me if you decide to go that direction and I'll pass on the names to you.
 
Bed the action for now but having the action trued is a waste of time and money unless you are having a new barrel put on.
 
It's actually still at ATRS until the rings and scope arrive, and I'm in NB. If you're near Calgary, though, I'd have no problem with you dropping by their shop and having a gander at it...

Their bases really are quite nice, and the staff has been exceptional without exception.
 
That's an understatement. The base that they came up with fits perfectly. REALLY nice work.

Meh I'd keep the rings black unless you're going with a silver scope also. Silver rings on a black scope would look out of place IMHO.
