Where do they sell handguns in the GTA?

The instant my PAL gets issued I want to go and touch some 22 handguns, because that will be my first or second purchase. Where is the closest store where I can do this? I have checked Le Baron's and Bass Pro but I don't think they sell handguns (not in the GTA locations anyhow).

Or if no stores are nearby maybe at a range I can go and hang out and look at other people's toys if I ask nicely?

Ideas? Thanks in advance

And exactly why do you want to own a handgun.....?

BTW, you can't get a handgun with a PAL.

In any other forum, if someone asked if they could hang out and touch my toys, I think I'd be a bit concerned.

That's just me.

You don't need a PAL to own or carry a handgun in Toronto, don't you watch the news.

PAL Pistols and such

Yes I understand that, but then I sorta thought this site was for the law abiding side of firearm ownership.;)

It is Mark and you will learn that there is quite a bit to do in order to be law abiding. Assuming every is in order, a PAL will enable you to buy non-restricted firearms which essentially means rifles and shotguns. You may get different treatment than I did ( BTW I was 66 at the time) but retailers wouldn't even take a restricted firearm out of their case until I could show them my RPAL which gives me access to restricted firearms. In order to own a restricted, say a pistol, you either have to declare yourself a "collector" or join or say you will join an accredited shooting club. If you go with the "collector" option and everything else goes OK, you will have the privilege of getting a document that will let you take the pistol home but no where else. Unless your home is a recognized gun club, you will never get to fire the thing. Most people want to shoot and so the club is the better route.

If I were you, I would try to connect with one of the clubs in Ontario that you can reach easily. Most clubs include members that will be very happy to teach you the ropes and give you the path that you will have to follow depending on what you want to do. I'm in the US for the winter but belong to a great little club in Waterford. It's not close for you but if you want to make a connection there I will give you some additional information and a person to call. Our club is very open to new members and wants to attract younger people. While Waterford may not be close enough for you, check out the ones that are closer. Some of them have newcomer events and those will give you a lot information and help in getting started.

If you do want to drive to Orillia, Ellwood Epps is a great store with very knowledgeable people

I think your response was intended to the OP, not me, so I won't take offense. Forum display modes can be a pain.:)

Okay obviously I have used the wrong language. I am getting a PAL with designation for both non-restricted and restricted. Looks like we call that an RPAL here. So yes I will have an RPAL.
Will check out Al Flaherty's

jack-o-ted,

I gave you an lengthy response but unfortunately directed it to Markb.
You have been given a lot of leads and I'll give you a couple more. To guys like me, guns have an almost romantic appeal. I read the magazines and drool over the great pictures. People on the forums are often great but like me are somewhat biased to what they own themselves. I have SIG's, a great S&W Revolver and more recently a high-end 1911 by Nighthawk. Of course they are all great but that's why I bought them.

If I were you I would think very carefully about what you want to do with the gun. Casual plinking with friends suggests certain types of guns and corresponding budgets. If you want to compete then that changes things sometimes a lot. Bulls Eye is all about accuracy. I want to be accurate but Bulls Eye is slow and deliberate. I want to run around and have serious fun so I got into IPSC. IPSC suggests a different kind of gun from Bulls eye and even in IPSC there are several divisions.

Before I bought my SIG X-Five I studied the rules of IPSC carefully and talked to others. You see only double action (DA) and DA/SA guns can be used in the "Production" division where I thought I would start. Another X-Five very similar to mine is SINGLE action only SAO. SAO guns must shoot in other (higher) divisions depending on how they are equipped. So you see the gun and sometimes the caliber will limit you. That's why it's important to think about your new hobby and talk to others as you are doing in the forum.

At my club, beginners even if they are unlicensed and don't have their own gun can come to practice night. There our members will be happy to talk with you and let you shoot under careful supervision. When I went the first time, I got to shoot about 5/7 different guns. Different feel, different recoils and most of the different action types. It was a great way to start.

You have to remember that the stores want and need to sell you something. I have stood at gun counters and have heard more than a little BS during the sales pitches. If you have the time and patience, doing a lot of homework will make you happier in time.

You are correct, you will be getting a PAL. The CFC uses the term PAL to distinguish it from a POL which is a "possession only" licence.
As you figured out, "RPAL" is the local shortform designation for a PAL that includes restricted. I've never heard of an RPOL even though I had one for many years.

Hey that sounds like fun, and a good way to try before buying. Perhaps I need to go to a range and politely ask people to show me their equipment...

Responses like that are neither funny nor useful for the OP.

jack-o-ted PM me, if we can make arrangements we can go to my club and you can try .22 and .44 revolvers and/or .32 and .45 semis.
Let me know.

Cheers, Will
