Hi guys! I'm looking to pick up my own "black rifle" at some point in future, and this whole thing with AR15 upper in 5.45x39 got me really interested for a few reasons. First of all AR is common and know platform no surprise here. Second 5.45 very close to .223 in flight and case dimensions - no need for different mags and and 10rounders can be used as well . Third and most important is the price of surplus ammo for it, its on average 140$ per 1080 rnds in US witch is 20$(on average) cheaper then surplus 7.62x39. I did some search on for ammo and that upper in Canada, and the only thing i found was some German "Dynamite Nobel" ammo at TradeEx for 25$ for 50. Does anybody know if there are uppers available in Canada? i would still get one even if i cant get surplus ammo for it, just cause i was born an evil commie:p. It seems to be a popular caliber in states now generaly due to it's price (and good climate for ak's), wondering if it we be as much popular here and deallers would consider brining some in

i guess the only better thing will be to have a AR180b in 5.45 but it is too much to dream about

The thing to dream about is a non-restricted, full auto version of that. It isn't our fault that everyone let a bunch of dumbasses into the HOC. I don't think anyone here voted for them in the 90's.

IIRC importer are have difficulty getting any Ex-Soviet ammo approved for importation by NRCan, all the cheap surplus ammo for sale in Canada comes from Czech Republic.

Is it run as a armor-piercing or some thing like that? they are nasty but not much more when 5.56, hbean is there any specific reason NRC wouldn't let it in? That's sucks, as some one i know say I want Katusha to drive to Ottawa :(

Can't remember the exact reason, so don't quote me on it, But I think they say Soviet or Russian ammo contains trace amount of toxin or carcinogen.

Guys thank you for all your reply's i really appreciated you time and advices!!! =))

It's really said if the thing with toxins is true, was hoping that a friendly shop could bring them in :(
I'll do some more research the subject on on my own, i'll keep you posted on it.

You can still get a 7.62x39 Upper... Or 9mm... Or 45ACP... Or .22LR... Lot's of options still.

I have to admit though... Even state side 5.45 is getting harder to get (which is probably the reason so many have been for sale lately).

yes i though about it, but i want something straiter in flight - 5.56 is a popular choice and im still considering getting a XCR or SA, Ar180b - be the best option. But 5.45 is completely beating it be the price and others to, never give it a thought before cause as far as i could recall the only gun chamber for it was AK and its prohib with all of the out comes of it. The upper was the thing that got me looking in to it, i would still attempt to get even if the surplus ammo would be "no go" because of cool factor "something different" and im personally better shot with it, well as i think )). Cheap ammo is off cause a big moving factor, i wrote to NRC today, asking if i can import it for my personal use, gotta see now what they have to say, and asked if ammo was indeed marked by them as toxic, may be there still hope see it on the shelfs. Ya, read some thing about it drying up in states, supply shouldn't run dry though, they are reducing army by 50% in Russian now so - less need for ammo - more for export, and Ukraine is looking into switching to Tavors for MBR. So i think the problem will not be related to lack of it.

Well, I contacted NRCan - and to put it short, they will let me import those rounds for personal use only with certain paper work done, but the problem is i can find any body in U.S. who would ship them here, i'm going to keep looking.

Thanks Satain! i saw those, if i'll not succeed probably will have to go with them, i've been told their are sniper rounds from East Germany as they had AK74 sharp shooter variant, but personal i never heard of such a thing in official service in USSR it self though, they should be quite accurate )))

As far as search for the upper receiver/gun in 5.45, didn't fund any thing in Canada that is restricted / non restricted, probably also will be have to be imported from U.S. ...

Best Regards

IF the relative cost of the round can be maintained, I would certainly consider picking up a 5.45x39 upper for greater volume of training.

There is no market for 5.45 in Canada. Very few guns in this caliber that you can actually shoot.
It costs a lot of money to get ammo approved for import and then to import it - no dealer is going to spend all that money to bring in ammo that is not gonna sell.
And a bunch of guys buying 5.45 uppers is not gonna change that.
There will never be cheap 5.45 surplus in Canada unless the current gun laws change for the better (unlikely), so if i was you, i'd look at another caliber.
The only reason we even have cheap Czech 7.62x39 is because its banned in US. If it wasnt, it'd all go there. Enjoy it while it lasts.
