Flash-hider bore diameter vs accuracy

Hi guys,

Intro: I have a XCR barrel in 7,62x39. I took off the brake and will get it threaded like an AR-15. I also have a Vortex/Dlask .223 FH to install on it. I don't have it with me but the FH bore is about .33".

Situation: leaving the bore at the barrel crown, the bullet allow gases to pass around it. FH made for .270 and .30 calibers have a larger bore than .33".

Questions: How much effect a FH can have on accuracy?
Is there some guidelines on clearance for this or should a guy test various FH bore sizes to figure the best combo?

A lot of manufacturers use 110% of bore size for the "bore" of the flash hider. Some taper it outward to the muzzle.

Some FH's can have positive affects on accuracy, but it depends on a lot of factors.

There might not be enough material on your FH to do what you want to do. Dlask made 7.62x39 FH exactly what you are looking for called the VZ01.

I recommend that you buy a flash hider specific to the caliber, which means getting your barrel threaded 14mmx1 and RH or LH thread depending if you want to use an VZ 58 or AK FH.

Or - send your request to Joe at DLASK and get him to make it the way you want it (call first).

DON'T!!!!!!!
If you have a clean, virgin diameter barrel muzzle,
thread it for a larger size.
"like an AR-15" means 1/2" - 28 tpi and that leaves
a quite thin "meat" around the bore.
The M-14 people have very limited choices,
because their bbl is designed to be pencil-thin,
and other than 1/2 -28 tpi, their choices would be
only M14x1 (accepts accesories from VZ), and 9/16-24
(not that many accesories around with that thread).

But you, if you can, be smart and do it 5/8" - 24 tpi.
You will have a healthy amount of meat left around the bore and
you will be able to use a lot of accessories from AR-10.

How much is the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle now,
before cutting threads???

Thank you for the information guys.

I'll probably go with a M14 or AR10 FH then. When I get back home I'll start by measuring my thread and see from there.

In the XM-110 prelude we notice that 5/8-24 was not ideal for 7.62mm barrels with an OD at the muzzle of .750 we started doing 3/4-24 UNS2A to preserve long term accuracy and reduce ovaling at the muzzle

That can be caused by the excessive amplitude of the whip,
especially for the second and third wave mode
(probably from some heavy weights attached at the muzzle).
