What percentage have handled an AK?

Here are afew faults I have incountered "all easy fixes" So please calm down or i'll have to hand out internet hugs ;)

-Burs on the disconnector causing the hammer not to reset "Romanian AKM"
-Butt stocks coming loose
-Pistol grips coming loose
-And yes Yugo mags that did not fully lock into the mag housing "they still worked but were a PITA to remove" So I had to do some hand fitting to make them work smoothly.

The AK is great, but its not the god of all wpns and yes they do break down "unless your a super cool mall ninja ;)"

why arent you over at the akfiles anymore?????

oh yeah i know why lol!!!!! just behave yourself over here, im sure they have their own version of englishmike, so you just remember to be a good boy now lol!!!!

but seeing you here, sure makes me hope that folks like 762fmj, ismurphy, or a few other folks dont come over here!!!!

f:P:

is it just me or are you also having a hard time believing what he just said aswell????? and having to hand fit yugo mags to an ak???? what the hell????

ive only in my entire life seen only a dozen or so ak rifles fail!!!! one was someones hatchet job parts kit gun, that wouldnt even cycle, because the rails where installed in such a way that the carrier was binding up, another one was on a video, that had some asshat hadji shooting one and it blew up in his hands! and the others failed because they where blown the hell up, buy various mortar/artillery/airstrikes that we called in on them lol!!!!

I could see having to hand fit mags / other issues if it was a hatchet job or a screw build.. Beyond that... It's hard to even build one that wont work.. :p

Interesting...

So many of these posts are (IMO) mental mastrubation; so forgive me if this is one of the dreaded few.
I've never shot an AK-47. I've handled one in '98 at a buddies kitchen table (BTW he got rid of it). Pretty crude; it was a Norc he said.
I've asked one of my relatives in Nevada about them and he said " F--king farm equiptment, made for peasants"
And he is a gunnut ( he own's 3 AK's himself, an Polish made Draganov, SVT-40 {which strangely enough is way more expensive than what we pay}; all the neat toys).
If this requires a poll or something; someone who's more active than I... kick it up a notch.
I know a large percentage want them ( Que the sad violin music), but had we actually handled them would we still desire one?
Or would we realize they are "Farm equiptment"?
Armed forces guys; if you were to throw your opinions out on this topic that'd be great as they mean much more than the weekend warriors.

Let's go to part two:

How many have driven a T34 Tank or flown a Mig?

I've handled an AK, RPK, and Dragunov overseas. Fired an AK. The other two were part of a cache, along with a PKM and some other stuff.

Given a choice between my AR-15 or an AK, the AR-15 would win out any day of the week.

If we were allowed to own AK's, I'd probably buy one to shoot every once in a while. But it wouldn't be a favourite rifle. I don't own anything in 7.62x39 right now, as SKS's and 858's aren't really my thing.

Back in 1988 I used to own a Norinco AKS-56. 19" barrel, non restricted, 4 30 round mags. It was good for 4-6" groups at 100 yards. I remember it as being a bit more accurate than the Chinese SKS I had at the same time. It was reliable, and the chromed bore, bolt, bolt carrier and piston made it a breeze to clean.

I sold both after about a year, before I was half way through a crate of surplus ammo. The novelty wore off. Pop-pop-pop-pop-pop, another 6" group, ho-hum. Can't even hunt groundhogs with it around here.

shot so many drums out of my buddys ak in the states we caught the handguards on fire till they burnt off the rifle.

only one thing better than alot of ammo....alot of free ammo... lol

That's another thing I remember! There was a brass pin through the forestock, ground off flush with the wood, that would heat up when I was firing a lot. I'd be holding the forestock and the tips of that pin would make me flinch when I touched them! Do they all have that pin or just the Norcs?

when I used to work at a store we had a chinese type 56 AK, and many times I made it a point to clean it. It was probably the cleanest piece in the shop when it finally left

AK`s are ok same as an SKS almost but easier to reload because magazines. honestly I like the 858 better, but ak`s were made to be cheaper. I`ve fired a valmet too which is nicer than any other AK I`ve come across but they are rare and $. If I could I would own an AK prefferably the standard Russian kind.

Well living here in NZ i can own AK's and have done.. here are a few that ive owned

Note: this picture has been Shop'd .. was to show the gunsmith how short i wanted it.. it did end up looking like this about 2 weeks after this photo was taken.

i foolishly sold the Molot Vepr12 RPK( first picture ) , and given the chance i would buy another one in a flash, but people dont like to part with them

the standard Saiga12's are rubbish for a right hander, unless you convert them to a left hand bolt, or a gas tube charging handle system ( also left hand side ).
the reason for this is you have to manually lock the bolt open before you can put in a new ( loaded ) magazine. so a mag change is a 4-step process. Lock bolt > remove mag > roll new mag into place ( an art unto itself )> release bolt
if the charging handle is on the left side it makes this process phenominally easier

And there's the rub with an AK anything.

Cheers!

Fired a lots of it in my good ole days in Soviet Military...I'm from Latvia originally and we are allowed to collect select fire firearms there. So, I'll enjoy them:50cal: when I move back there upon retirement(if firearms laws won't change then:rolleyes:)
