Had some good rust on all of myne, cleaned them up to a saveable condition i think, do they just go back in bare steel?

Will also need some new screws, maybe the local hardware store has something that will work, had to drill off the old ones, they were rusted in too bad.

If you're going for the authentic look, they stay shiny and get covered by the liberal coating of shellac the Russians like so much, acquiring a brassy tinge.

I have used the kind of screws found in the cheap HomeDepot picture frame hanging kits before. They're not perfect, but if you do the glue and toothpicks to fill the old holes they're a good snug fit. You might have to sand down the tops of the screws a tad to get them to sit flush as the counter sink isn't real deep.

I would like to see pictures when you're done :) Pat-on-the-back-smilie for putting the old girl back to rights. Last one I had that looked like yours got two coats of black Krylon and a Ramline stock.

I guess I need to cave and buy a book? Using 7.62x54r.net as my primary resource and they show shiny on pretty much all their example rifles, even the rarities and the Finn rifles without swivels...

That's because all the ones in the pics are worn, flip over an original & you will see either blue or rust with traces of blue.
