So we decided to do a test on a bunch of magazine followers
This is what happened when we took 3 shotgun magazine follower and put them in a jar of paint thinner for 30days.
#1 is a factory Remington 870 mag follower made in 2010
#2 untouched Remington 870 mag follower (displayed to show what it should look like)
#3 S&J machined Delrin Mossberg follower 12ga
#4 S&J machined delrin Remington follower Gen I 12ga

Wow, that REM follower looks nasty. It's like what styrofoam would react in paint thinner. Looks like cheese now. I suggest you contact Remington with your experiment and sell them on supplying them with your followers in the future.

I hope you have patents in place for those.

corect it got to about day 15 and there was not enough left parts left for me to reallt take a pic it was like soap day 20 al lthat was left of the norinco follower was about 30 little flecks of plastic.

Tell me you for the 2nd lot of followers???

the test we did on our own follower over and above this was to use acetone it took about 24hrs before it started to take affect, and ater 26 the follower was warped and unuseable.
But it was in perfect shape untill about 18-24hrs.
we tryed battery asid and that took about 4hrs to start to take affect then another 2 hrs before it started to get warped and unuseable.
we put in my factory follower from the bennelli M2 tactical and it started to fizz right away 20mins and the bottom o the follower was gone.
stopped the project at that point, the M2 follower was aluminum with a red type II anodised finish.


On talking to remington about the follower, we fly up to see the remington boys in qubec city on friday

based on this test I will no longer store my shotguns in jars of paint thinner!!!

What does your test prove?

That you shouldn't store your gun in paint thinner..... I believe it shows that your follower will not break down over time from cleaning solvents and they are super tough materilas used in their followers.

Simon, this may be posted elsewhere but can you briefly describe the two styles you have available?

Unless you're storing your gun in paint thinner, probably nothing. However, it's a safe bet that the S&J followers will stand up longer to gunpowder residue, cleaning solvent, and temperature changes.

My own Norinco follower disintegrated in the gun in a less than dignified fashion.

Yes styrene based plastics are damaged by paint thinner. If your follower was made to be used in a paint sprayer that would be pretty important. But seeing as it is designed to function in a shotgun... it is the answer to the question that no one asked.

OOOOOOh, good idea. If it can etch a Glock frame, it will be interesting to see how the various followers hold up.

no not really, heve you seen what is in some of the gun cleaners places like walmat and crappy tire are selling??
Not me even get into peopel useing brake cleaner ect to clean their guns.

Nope I just have about 2000 pounds of titanium about 10 feet away from my machine. And it took exactly the same amount of effort as making a stainless one

Guilty. However, it's been on guns almost completely disassembled, and followed up with compressed air and a regreasing. I could see someone trying it in the shotguns magazine trying to get that gross old Remington green hulled ammo residue out after a summer.
