Whats everybodies opinion on what weight range is ideal for a hunting rifle?

Would be used in a forest or fields, no mountainous terrain. Rifle would be a bolt gun in .270 Win with a scope mounted.

What is the best weight range for the scope and the rifle? Any thoughts on this? I realize some say as light as possible, but what do you all routinely carry?

Is an 8lb rifle and a 1.2lb scope with rings abit much?

Not with a good shoulder strap properly adjusted.

Yeah I am use to lugging around my Citori, so I think I can handle a 15Km hike with the rifle as well. I was just wondering if some of you guys like to keep it below a certain weight or is this not a huge consideration?

i'm carrying a 10 pound rifle with scope and i don't think its too bad but my friends say its pretty damn heavy. looking into picking up a mountain rifle soon pretty interested into what people say is light here.

I would find that too much.

There is no "best" or "ideal", there is just what you are willing to carry, what settles the shakes well even when you're puffing and sweating, and what absorbs recoil enough as the cartridges get powerful. So some weight is actually helpful, but all of that is personal preference.

You say it will be " used in a forest or fields" and not mountains, but I find bush guns get heavy real fast because they are often in my hands rather than hanging on a sling. I would never want to carry a 10lb (when fully loaded etc.) gun all day for anything. It's supposed to be fun.

Personally I have found that I can shoot off hand better with a rifle weighing around 7.5-8.5 pounds, 9 pounds would probably be max. That's just me however and everybody is different.

I find that most of the new synthetic stocked rifles (ie. Rem sps) to be about right for the use you are describing. I have carried my remington sendero all day, roughly 10 1/2 pounds, but it is a tad heavier than an good all around rifle. I like the weight of my win M70 classic stainless, with 14 ounce VX-III and PRW rings/bases. The rifle is just over 8 pounds with sling and three rounds, that's pretty much my ideal weight for a general use rifle.

Extra weight in the barrel will help with steadiness for offhand shooting, some rifles require much more weight to tame recoil, as in the case of the big Sharps calibers, where 11-14lbs. is needed, at least for my .45/100 and .50/90 Sharps, though not for the 45/70 IMHO.

My thoughts are that you buy the gun you want to shoot once you get to your game. If it is 10 lbs and you can only carry 7 lbs, then go on a diet and lose 3 lbs.

10 pounds or so for rifle, scope, ammo, and sling is no big deal. I do 90% of my hunting on foot and I carry at least ten more pounds in my webbing ( load bearing vest). I'm good from sunrise to sunset.

A 7# (total) 270 is a nice carry. I wouldn't want one over 8. My 358Norma weighs 8# scoped. Can't wait to try it out.

Overly heavy guns are a drag. Why make work out of something that's supposed to be fun?

.

Yeah the base featherweight is lighter, but I like the wood pattern on the super grade. I looks nicer :D

My M7 Custom KS in 350RM is quite powerful and lotsa fun to carry in the thick stuff at only 5 3/4 lbs unloaded. I gather that many prefer a 350RM to be heavier but I likey. I've got other carbines in the high 6s and low 7s lbs which are very good too. I consider a scoped rifle at 8 1/2 lbs unloaded to be at my upper limit of preference. I do alot of woods hiking when hunting.
