22's and Where to Buy (Edmonton, Alberta)

Looking for a 22 bolt action (preferably with scope) for under $200. I've done some digging, and come across the Mossberg 802 Plinkster ($130, no scope), Savage Mark II ($210, no scope), and the Savage 300 series ($200 with scope).

What are your thoughts on these rifles? I'd be using it for plinking and grouse hunting.

Also, where in Edmonton are you buying rifles? Wholesale Sports seems to be the cheapest, while P&D and others seems more expensive.

If you don't like the choices above, what would you purchase instead?
 
The Plinkster is an OK starter gun but don't expect too much for 150 bucks. I have a couple of them at the farm so my good ones don't get trashed when teen-agers are around. They shoot ok. WS, P&D, and Milarm has them, lots of colors too, even pink. Haven't tried the other models, but maybe best to go in and handle them a bit. You get what you pay for. Keep your eye out in the spring for cases of rounds. They usually go on sale about that time.
 
For Savage Wholesale is usually less than P&D. Of your choices I would go with a Savage Mark II with an AccuTrigger, and if you can swing it for your price, a heavy barrel.
 
I especially like the advice from fiddler. Having said that, if you are only going to pay what you say for a new .22 LR you might consider also the Norincos sold by MilArm. If you get a good one, they are generalloy copies of Brno CZ rimfires, you have lucked out. If you get a hangar queen, then you got what you paid for.
 
If money is tight, I suggest watching EE, as well as Alberta outdoorsmans forum and the edmonton buysell for a used mossberg/Cooey/ CIL/ marlin. You could even put in a wtb stating what you're after.
Personally, I would go that way instead of a new savage. You have a good chance of finding one locally.

Better still, get a used Savage off EE. Better than mossberg/Cooey/ CIL/ marlin. .22LR barrels essentially never wear out. However, they can be abused, and some never shoot from day one, so you have to be careful.

I tend to disagree, haven't seen that many bargains in .22s on the EE. And if you're new to the game, you might overpay for something used.

P&D was great when I mail-ordered from them. Wish I'de been able to go in person.

Frontier Firearms also has good pricing sometimes.

May not be a site sponsor, but Lebaron has some good mail order pricing.
 
I bought an 802 Plinkster with scope from Milarm (before I knew where P&D was f:P:)

Its shot well for me and although the scope looks to be the cheapest one out there, it has held zero quite well for me...

Just remember to pick up a couple of spare mags. 10 rounds doesn't go far when your having fun at the range! :D
 
for a new gun i would go with the savage imho also there is a gun show in edmonton this weekend. it wouldn't hurt to check it out so you can test feel some used ones too.cheers also i bought a marlin 795 a few months ago and have had nothing but problems with it. fail to feed, fail to eject more times in 500 rounds of a spectrum of ammo. i had more issues with it than my 3 1022s did in over 20000 rounds. i cleaned it multiple times completely and couldn't see any issues either. the sights (front and rear) cound be removed without tools too as they were that loose. that one dissapeared very quickly.

P&d have way better staff and service . There optics dept has a Hugh selection . When the guy at wholesale mounts a scope and tells you " it was close only a couple turns " ask him for a box of ammo cause chances are you'll need it just to get it on paper. Wholesale sports is cheaper with less selection and terrible service . Ive never heard a rant about p&d but have heard lots about wholesale
 
In Edmonton your only two real choices are P&D or Milarm. I have bought from both and will do so again. I have also purchased from the EE and had good success. I guess what it comes down to is how much of a hurry you are in, as well as what kind of store/environment do you like shopping in? Now, I'm not speaking for anyone but myself here, but I usually don't even consider WS as a viable option. I go there for visual stimulae and if I find something I like, I get it where I KNOW it'll be in stock, including rimfire ammo. Case in point, walked into the south side location last year only to find NO .22lr at all. "No one anywhere has any" was the story. So drove all of 3 min. to Cambodian Tire and bought a whole bunch of different types. Next day did the same over at P&D. YMMV

I've definitely got the time aspect on my side, so I'm not too worries about that. Knowledgeable, friendly staff (better known as customer service) is key to purchasing things for me. I'll spend the little extra to work with someone who knows their products, and can discuss them and recommend accordingly.
 
Wholesale sports is the cheapest. If you dont mind waiting for some service and getting a d-bag when you finaly do get some service. P and D I would recomend, might cost $15 more but the service makes up for it
 
I just set foot in P&D today with no intention of anything. Walked out with a new scope for my little .22

Nothing but happy to help service the entire way. Even though I flat out said to the employees who helped me I had no intention of buying anything. Even after I said that... they continued to help me and be polite.

If its more expensive, I don't really care, as having it in stock, on hand, with service is worth it. People who think otherwise can continue to shop at wal mart.

In reference to the OP - I bought a Plinkster 802 / feeble scope combo on the EE from a local Edmonton guy for not much more than $100.00 so I think the deals can be had. I was in the same boat, just looking for a cheapy .22 to piss around with.

Bought a Simmons scope for $50 today to throw on it... So same gun as new, with a much better scope on it (anything's better than that little thing) for a good amount less than buying the scoped combo new.

Just thought I'd mention, if you're still looking.

Just to edit... I'm not sure from what I bought that they ARE more expensive (at least maybe not on certain things)... the scope I purchased on Simmons' website is $90.00.. So, I don't think I paid extra for service.
 
I agree with most of the posts here. I would say that I think Phoenix Gun Shop and Range can be worth taking a look in. They don't have the number of firearms that other stores do but they sometimes have great used, are open Sunday and the staff who have been there for years have always been knowledgeable and helpful. I am not positive but since they are a range they might allow you to try a used rimfire firearm at the range to see what you think of it. Having said that P&D is in my opinion the best overall gun shop in the GEA.
