I am building another new target / hunting rig for this falls moose hunt..but can't decide on the action..the rest of the materials are already decided on.

Surgeon..

The Surgeon seems to be more well built..

When I was in Calgary I stopped by ATRS to pick up and order and he had a surgeon action at the counter. Beautiful action no doubt and very well build. Pricey no doubt, but why not :D

He also has his action as well, which is a left feed right bolt, which I really like.. well for target shooting, maybe not hunting. but who knows.

There are LOTS of Bats on the firing line at F class shoots, but word is the lugs are rather soft. One of the US shooters came to the America Match last Aug almost immediatly after shootign at Raton. He ended up w/ a piece of grit scouring an ugly gash on one of his bolt lugs. I don't think softer material machined to tigh tolerances are issues you want to contend with in a hunting rifle.

Those are the internals of the bolt:

Shrowd, firing pin, firing pin spring, extractor, extractor spring, retaining pins, bolt catch, etc, etc.

I think it would be a very personal choice. They are both great actions.

I personally like Bat. They cycle so smooth and are so pretty. The issues with soft metals and galling are a little embellished.

If its going to be heavily hunted I'd go with the Stiller or even a Remington.

If its more of a precision rifle I don't think it matters....Though I think the BAT is a more precision oriented and a bit nicer finished.
Bat has been around for a long time...A rarity in custom action makers.

Have a look at Borden, Defiance and Stiller, all of which we import. Second last Bat in the shop the bolt handle came off in my hand, brand new action, not soldered properly.

the Defiance action is very nice & a great price built very well.if you are in b.c corlanes carries them.

Yeah..not a fan of soldered on bolts..thus the reason I think Surgeons are built better..

Bat actions are great or perhaps the best actions for target shooting in my opinion. But for hunting I'd go for the Surgeon cause if you get some dirt and what not in a Bat, the action will lock up on ya guaranteed. The Surgeon will take it like a champ. I use a Bat for bench rest and it doesn't take much for it to jam. Just my 2 cents worth.
