i've had this old rifle in my basement for years. it was give to me by someone who also has no idea what it is. it has a clip built on the side and the ammo enters the chamber from the oppisite side of the clip.
there appears to be 2 safeties on this 1 on the bolt and 1 on the gun, the one on the bolt works, the one on the gun i have no idea what it's for.
the clip has a little trap door that allows the clip to be dissasembled.
extractor claw is on the top of the bolt.
the only markings besides the serial #'s is a a crown with what apears to be a symbol of fancy letter under it and the date 1924.
i don't even know what calibre this is?
no stock.
anybody know what i have here?

It sounds like a Krag Jeorgenson (?) rifle. Marked with a crown its probably Danish. The pics would not open on my PC so I can't see it.

You have a Krag-Jorgenson rifle, friend, and they might look a bit odd, but they are solid and reliable and very, very smooth. My machine can't get at your pictures, so I can't identify it perfectly, but it is either Danish or Norwegian: both countries were making the Krag still in 1924.

If it is Danish, the hinge for the trap-door will be at the FRONT of the magazine and the rifle will be chambered for the 8x58R cartridge, which is a formidable beast in its own right.

More likely it will be Norwegian, in which case the letter with the crown on top will be a K for Kongsberg, the arsenal at which the rifle was made, the hinge of the magazine will be on its bottom and the magazine top will roll to your right to reload the rifle..... and the rifle itself will be a 6.5x55.

Norwegian Krags are rather sought-after in original condition, but they are not all that valued if they have been Bubba'd. And that is too bad because they are a beautifully-made article.

Hope this helps.

smelli it does help! the magazine and everything but the checkering on the bolt knob looks the same as the one in the link provided in post #2.... so i know who made it and that it's a 6.5x55...cool!
be neat to throw a stock back on this old thing.. where would i find 1 and is this thing worth bothering with?
worth any $ :)

did it ever come to your mind to put some oil on this all so poor remains of a fine rifle ?????

I really don't get it why people are so incompetent and diplay pictures of their rusty "treasures"!

Very nice. Some steel wool and some oil will clean that up quite well. Don't forget to bring the elbow grease! :)

It has the original rear sight, so looking good so far.

Maybe some pictures of the barrel end can tell us if it has been chopped down, or it is original length.

This guy here has some Krag steel bits for sale:

...and this guy has some Krag stocks for sale:

You might be able to put this old girl back together after all for a small investment! Enjoy! ;)

i may just do that now! until today this was a peice of junk someone was going to throw away, and i had no idea what it was when i first got it ten years ago i oiled it and threw it on an old gun rack downstairs. the rust isn't that bad slight surface rust but when you take pictures with an $800 camera it can make models look pimply. :)
never give it another thought until today.
! why post pictures of a newly shined up peice of rust. i'm not fake.

A full view photo of the gun would be better.

The last picture you posted is kind of blurry and hard to make out the rear sight.

You may want to repair that hole in the drywall before you purchase the bits and pieces to finish this rifle though. ;)

It appears to be uncut, but you would have to measure the barrel.

The front sight blade seems to be broken as well.

The barrel should be 610 mm / 24" for a M1912 Short Krag.

the barrel is 21 1/2" from the end to where you can see the bolt behind the front sight. and yeah there is no blade, there is a slot in the block for one. hopefully the blade just slides in place?

That's a Norwegian Krag rifle in 6.5x55, your front site is buggered and not military, the rear is good. Allot of these were sporterized years ago. Additionallly so you don't waste your money, the parts described are for an American Krag and will not fit yours.

Yeah. Sorry about those links, they ARE for American Krags...

I didn't look close.

Unless you can get a "Want to Buy" ad answered in the EE. You are probably better off selling that one for parts...

Perhaps you can find a gunsmith with a Norwegian Krag sporter stock sitting around the back of his place that you could throw on it, but unlikely.

Have fun.

Norwegian Parts are hard to get and are very pricey. The last one I has was a Stomperud Krag.

Looked Like this:

The last stock I saw forsale for a Norwegian Krag was $440 on ebay in 2009.
