Just checked the local online classifieds. There are seven 300 wm rifles there for sale. I guess their Dad's .303 or 30-30 was not enough gun to kill a moose, so they got sucked into buying these and figured out you do not need a anti-aircraft gun to kill a moose.

I like my 300wm, its nice to have something shoot a little flatter for the fields/praries of alberta. And I dont know how far out I would consider a shot with a 303 or 30-30 to be ethical for some of the shots you could take in comparison to a 300wm. I would much rather drop an elk in the corner of a field first try, then try and follow it through the dense river valley bush they seem to like.
Maybe for hunting the bush out on the rock there a smaller caliber would be ideal though...

I hunt with my dad's 300 H+H and while his buddy's were standing looking at the moose with there 303's and30-30's at 250 +yds he was filling there tags.

I'm ok with 300WM as overkill on deer. Hasn't cost me an ounce of meat so far. Now I'm shooting 300WSM, but that 6 of one half a dozen of the other. More kick than the 308, but no regrets over that.

Maybe it's because they decided the .300 wasn't enough for moose and are moving up to the .338 WM. ;)

Maybe your bias is just a little obvious. I think the .300 wm (whichever one you mean by that) is a very versatile round capable of taking any N.A. game with enough authority that no one will question the choice. You are right, that it may not be "necessary" for moose, but I think my .300Win is a very good moose round.

And .300 WM is the traditional short form for .300 WEATHERBY Magnum.
I'm guessing you mean Winchester Magnum.

300 WBY is the abbreviated form of 300 Weatherby.
300 WM is the original Winchester short magnum - commonly referred to as the 300 Winchester - and the 300 WSM is the "new" 300 Short Magnum

My 308 doesn't have the effective range with a heavier bullet to take less than optimum (ie. not broadside) shots at medium to long range. I believe folks that are getting rid of 300WM are not going back to 30-06/308s. They are going to newer, more fashionable cartridges like the 338s, WSMs,etc. I don't believe those cartridges have a useful ballistic or bullet weight advantage over the 300WM like it does over the 30-06/308/303/30-30 etc. Where the newer cartridges actually do have a significant advantage; I don't believe one is necessary to hunt anything in North America.

"...got sucked into buying these..." A lot of guys will sell 'em after firing one or 2 shots. Mind you, they sell 'em just as quick, this time of year, to pay their Christmas bills.
"...My 308 doesn't..." Your .308 doesn't need heavy bullets for Bullwinkle. A 165 will kill any game in North America.
"...filling there..." Filling where? There(directional pronoun), their(possessive pronoun), they're(contraction of 'they are').

Not everyone has the skills to shoot a 25/25 in trap, consistantly hit the x-ring of an official F-class 500 yard target or to master the recoil of a .300 Win Mag. - even though others find the .375 H&H very managable.

It doesn't matter - a man/woman has to know their limitations and work within those in order to have fun and be successful.

Maybe they just wanted something else new and/or different. I love my 300 win mag. Never shot a 300 wby mag though but I'd love to get my hands on a 270 wby mag and a 375 hh. Ill keep my 300win mag instead of selling it the others jusst have to wait a few more paychecks and untill the gf is out for the weekend

Only 7 for sale? How many 308's and 30-06's for sale? By your logic, that must mean all those folks woke up to the fact that they are terribly under gunned, and need a lot more energy for the game they hunt. Or maybe they need the money. Or want to buy something else. I think your conclusions aren't supported by your evidence. - dan

Hmmm, another dead of winter thread, but it did remind me of a coversation I was drawn into in the local gun shop last weekend.

Somehow while checking on the status of a scope order I got talking to the guy next to me and it came up he had a 330 Dakota. And I shoot a 338wm so naturally we got talking... actually sounds like an excellent cartridge.

Anyway this older gentleman quips in with, "You don't need those howiters to shoot NA game. I shot a 300wm and it used to bloodshot the heck out of meat. That's why I just use a 308 now." To which I replied that I don't generally shoot animals in the meat I generally double lung them and they drop and there is little meat damage.

Then he somehow got on to Veitnam and how devastating the M16 was, etc, etc..

We politely heard him out and he went away.

The point of the story apart from amusement is:
1. Shot placement trumps cartridge almost everytime.
2. Not everyone experiences recoil the same. What may be unpleasant for some is nothing to another and accordingly it is not always about machismo.
3. We should count our blessings that we can shoot almost whatever we want to in this country (southern Ontario excepted with my condolences).

Not at 300+ yards with a rear quartering shot after being launched at 2650fps. Yes, I have the capability of making the shot responsibly.

Yep, wait for a better shot and slam him with a 308, 300 win, 300RUM or a 7mm rem. At 300yds a 308 is easily adaquate. If your 308 or 30-06 is not able to hit a deer sized target at 250yds, you should sell it to me, really cheap.....

why wonder one put a poor moose throught so much suffering with that very small 300wm ;) one must use a 50 bmg 6.5lb to successfully harvest moose at 65 yard to be eithical. :) ya a 303 lee enfield isn't the greats for those 350 yard shoots on a 500lb black bear devouring your local farmers grain in the sun.. the 6.5wsm will work good enough this year.. ill let you know around say august 15 when the season opens
