was looking for some insight. i have been in the process of building a "long" range 10-22 (heavy barell, all new VQ internals, 4x12x40 AO scope, bipod, etc.) i want to start sighting this thing in at 100 yds (and further if possible). i have only shot it so far at 50 yards and closer with generic bulk ammo, but have noticed quite abit of "strays", so i thought i would get some quality ammo like CCI or what not to try. My question is what would be the "go to" brands to try first ? i know that all rifle shoot differently, but what would be some good starter brands. i was thinking starting off with maybe 3 or 4 different types and going from there. i like this rig alot, and think it has a ton of potential, but i don't want to run the cheapy ammo and just be diss-appointed after spending (according to my wife) entirely TOO MUCH on a .22 !!LOL Any help woiuld be appreciated. thanks and Cheers

In a bolt gun, pretty much any of the quality target quality ammo like Lapua and Eley shoot well. Target ammo is subsonic however, and it may or may not work well in a semi-auto. SK has a high velocity load that may work well.

Experiment with as many types of .22lr ammo as you can find. My own preference for 100m target shooting is SK Std & Eley Sport. Both of these are reasonably priced at about $5.00 a box

Most rimfires are somewhat tempermental in their likes & dislikes. You will have to find out which your rifle prefers.

We shoot metallic pigs at 200 m at Sharon Gun Club the prefered inexpensive ($2.00 a box) ammo used is Federal 510 although this is high velocity it is remarkably consistant. You may want to try it.

Good luck with yout 10/22 build.

Semi-autos like things a little faster than the boltguns do.

Federal Champion has worked pretty good in the 10/22, but the best results I've had has been with Polar Biathlon.

Still get the occasional round dropping low, but I'm hoping the new barrel fixes that.

tch1717: You have put together a very nice rig there. Congratulations! I like all the above advice. I second the advice to check out the Lapua Biathlon ammunition because it is both competition ammunition and designed for cold weather dependability. At this time of year that can be a factor. Then the advice about trying out metallic silhouette ammunition is good. One thing I would not do is sacrifice bullet weight for flatter trajectory. I will make a probably off beat thought here. I can't tell if you are trying to get the maximum accurate effect range out of the short barrelled semi-auto carbine or develp a rifle that hits with consistent accuracy at 100 meters and maybe some beyond. If the latter you may find that you will have difficulty making your current rig a tack drive at 100 meters. If your real object is a 100 meter tack driver your would likley be better working up something like a Ruger 77/22 with a vermint or custom barrel and high quality optics. The Swiss military worked on that concept many years ago and developed .22 LR rifles that were capable of military grade acuracy at 150 meters. I believe they termed them Mini-Sniper rifles.

Check out "Targetshootingsupplies" in Toronto....also called NorthSylva I think

they have some verrrrry good ammo there.....expensive though

Personally I like CCI Standard velocity ammo.
Next up I like Eley sport.
Next up is RWS Target

Lapua is toooooo greasy for me.

My dlask loves bulk Winchester 333-555 ammo, Winchester Super X HP in .40gr. so far my tests out to 75m with Eley shows no major improvement over the above. Each .22 is different though.

eley sport is what i shoot .. i have tried some of the rws and cci but i am still so impressed with the the eley that i wont change .. unless i get my hand on some eley club it shoots even better out of my gun but i havent bit the bullet and ordered any yet

I use in my Dlask 10/22, Winchester Super X 40gr for shooting out to 210m (butt of our range) It has the omph to get out there with minamal drop and still has some energy to do damage.
