RFB initial thoughts, Range report ***JANUARY 31st ammo test at bottom of OP***

I just put an order in for a Vortex RazorHD 5-20X50 EBR3. (http://vortexcanada.net/products/riflescopes/razor/razor5-20x50_ebr3mrad.html) It might be a bit overkill for the RFB but to tell you the truth I don't think there's such a thing as overkill. Retail it will cost exactly the same as the RFB itself.

Umm my Falcon 4.5-18x 56mm looks ridiculous on the RFB carbine. 1-5 type scopes, reflex sites and hunting scopes in the 3-9x look decent.

That being said Im sure it'll be a lot of fun.

Hey Epoxy7, at least he can change his scope :p

Am going with 4-16x 40mm if accuracy merits it - heck I've got nothing to loose with how I look.

I'm considering the Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42 with the 30mm tube & mil dot reticle... Ugh... To many choices!!!

fireball, thank you for the range report! Most excellent!

Cheers

Yup. I'll be doing the same with rl15. Someone want to load up Varget? All 3 powders are similar. The more good loads we have the better.

That's what I have too, just haven't been able to do a ladder load yet. Do you know if the federal gold medal match uses the 168 SMK?

I really need to stop looking at this rifle, maybe its too late already. I mentioned the RFB to a buddy and he said he was reading it is now available in 223. Is this trueÉ I looked for shot show updates but didn`t see it.

And why the fucc does my keyboard change to symbols on this website É That was a question mark If I close and reopen IE its fine, is there a nother way to change backÉ

I picked up a bunch of Kydex sheets for cheek pieces a couple of years ago because Rooster33 was out of contact. Nice stuff to work with, Mercuty0 0, you`ll like it.

Yes 168 SMK for Federal Gold. From the results so far, it seems we need to hit the Federal Gold velocities 2600-2650 fps only from an 18.5" barrel. Seems like the sweet spot is exactly the same as Federal Gold from a 24" barrel.

I'll be using a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x 40mm on mine with Ballistic plex reticle. Simple but very good glass and a good scope. Also it looks right proportionally on the rifle. When they come out with a 24" version I'll take the Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x 50mm of my DPMS LR308. :D

I tried my Eotech 553 on the RFB. It looks good but.... the base is too wide. You hit your hand when using the charging handle.

I have the same problem from time to time - I have always assumed it is due to me accidentally hitting some combination of keys that I don't know about.

My first crack at load development will be with 168gr Hornady A-Max bullets and IMR 4895. I will be sure to post results... its going to be a long couple of days before my rifle arrives.

Yep, I know what you mean. I've seen quite a few photos of the RFB with huge optics on it and they do look a bit out of proportion. :confused:For right now though I'm not concerned with how it looks. I just want a really good optic on it so I can hunt, shoot tactical matches etc.
Eventually I'm gonna get a DTA SRS and I'll put the Vortex on there, and purchase an Elcan SpecterDR 1.5x6 7.62 for the RFB. Then the DTA will be my primary long range, hunting rifle and the RFB will be my primary 3-gun, short range tactical rifle.
Yep, I've got a thing for bullpups.

This is the DTA SRS.

I'm trying to decide what to put o for optics too once I get mine in,probably won't get it until July or august sometime, P&D told me I'm tenth in line,so 3 per shipment every 5 weeks or so it will be a while, but I want something a little high power because I'll be hunting with it too,so I want something like 12 to 18x that doesn't look like I strapped a telescope on this short bull pup.

I'm going 3-9 40mm 1" tube for hunting. Keep in mind unless your hunting on flat clear grazing land/prairies chances are most of you shots will be fairly close. The 3x allows you to make those shots along with further at 9x. Just don't go too much on the high end or you'll be kicking yourself when walking through slash areas or bush and your longest shot is 75 yards. There you are with a super handy bullpup and too high of magnification for those close shots. Keep that balance in mind when picking your hunting optic. Higher is better for target shooting but not necessarily for hunting.

hills, thick brush, fields,we have a little bit of everything, anywhere from 50 to 450 yards(I usually won't take the shot further that that and risk just wounding an animal,we have lots of game up here, just look at my trail cam pics in photo and video section)

Sounds great. We'll be trying to get a hunting load with 165 Fussion ammo for the RFB once we get the target stuff settled.

2011-01-28 Range day canceled due to pouring rain. Should be good to go tomorrow.

Well shot the RFB today. A bit of a mixed bag.

Shooting from the bench, well I had the same types of results that Fireball had. Not too happy with 2 moa. Shooting off hand it was a real joy. But I didn't get a chance to do much of that.

I shot a ladder with the RL15 rounds I made. 40-41 grains seemed to be the sweet spot. Unfortunately I used the 40.7 stuff to get the rifle on paper, so I didn't get a chance to do a group with them. So I can load up some more of those and give them a try. I might just try a few at 41 as well. Also thinking of trying Varget powder.

So the quest for the right round continues. We need as many people with these rifles trying out loads (With no BS results of course).

The rifle functioned perfectly when the rounds were an OAL of 2.8. The rounds Fireball had were slightly longer and had feeding issues with my rifle. Everything else was great. Love the casings ejecting out the front. That was just too cool.

Really neat rifle, I do like it. But I definitely want better than 2 moa. Granted I only shot some surplus stuff, some of the reloads fireball made, and the ladder that I made. But nothing looked like it was going to be spectacular. Some more work is definitely required.
