Another SKS Question?

I've been doing a little reading and pricing about SKS rifles before I think about perchasing one. I have a couple of question that I'm sure you all can easily help with.
1) What is the difference between a black bolt SKS and a Silver bolt SKS; besides the obvious colour difference?
2)Who produces a better SKS Russian, Chinese, or Yugo?
3) What difference between the chrome lined barrel and regular barrel and does this help with effects of shooting corrosive primers.

-Black bolt sks are usually painted during refurb while the silver bolt are blued. Depend of where they have been refurb. Some sks 1949 dated are painted but still have the bolt silver.

-Pretty much alls sks are the sames but usually, russian have better fit and finish than the chinese ones but somes chinese are really well finished. The yugo are know to have the best finish. They are all accurates, some can be more than the others.

-Chrome lined barrel appear circa 1951 i think, they have better resistance to wear and corrosion than the non-chrome ones, so they are easier to clean if you are using corrosive ammo, but keep in mind that they can eventualy rust but a slower rate. Non-chrome bore are said more accurate but i never shoot a non-chrome bore yet so i cannot testify.

1. Nothing. Only paint. However, black bolt refurbs are typically heavy refurbs, and could have more replaced parts (including new barrels), and therefore more mis-matched parts. This is not necessarily a bad thing for a shooter SKS -- as most are.

2. Russian. Let the flaming begin, but more people in the know will agree.

3. Chrome-lined barrels are far more resistant to corrosion, and are far more durable than non-chrome barrels. However, non-chromed barrels may be a bit more accurate.
 
By all means get an SKS you will not be sorry......they were made tough and can taking a beat and keep on going they are right up there with the AK's for toughness.
 
i like my sks for what it is
a relatively cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, all round ok rifle...
it's not a steyr .50 or an AR, its a battle rifle made for Russian conscripts
if you understand that you'll have a fun rifle that is great to shoot and
play around with, if you don't...buy something else.
i've got a russian with a chrome lined barrel so I don't know much about
the other variants.
 
Thank You very much everyone for your answers and replies!!!! I was thinking of this rifle as back up for other rifles I intend on buying it was to be my starting place for SHTF arsenal. If anyone has a comment on any other rifles that would suit this purpose please post up I'd like to hear oppions or suggestions. Thanks again. Kevin
 
sks is great if you want a cheap and not overly accurate rifle. it does what it's designed to do well... hit a man sized target. if you want a bit better acuracy the 858 is suppose to be much better. i have not tried it, but i know pople with them and they swear by it.

get an sks, hell get 2. they are a fun gun to use and abuse. cheap to buy, cheap to shoot and a all around fun little rifle.

Now my main rifle is my cz858, reliable and a bit more accurate than the average sks but start with the sks and you can get a cz858 later. You cannot go wrong with any sks.:)

If you're going to compare apples to apples then you have to compare a new/unissued Chinese with a new/unissued Russian, and unrefurbished/unissued Russians are kinda few & far between...

I don't have the factory numbers handy, but I have one with a pinned barrel and one threaded and they seem to shoot the same.

If I settle down and make an honest effort on the bench, I can shoot very similar groups with any of my Chinese or Russians.

Ofcourse apples to apples would be great but as you said unissued Russians are few and far between. So I was just curious about Refurb Russian VS Chinese new, cause people consider Russian to be the best sks. Just curious how they would stack up to eachother in fit and finish so I can figure out which I'd prefer to buy

Mmmkay. The Chinese is new, the Russian refurb is not, so again it's not a fair comparison. Refurbs come in everything from minty to guns that have had stock repairs, are swimming in black paint and mis-matched parts - I got one from Milarm (of course they replaced it) that was missing an extractor and firing pin.

Another way to put it - you buy a shiny new Chinese, you're getting a shiny new rifle. You buy a refurb Russian, you want to do your own picking and choosing or deal with somebody on the EE like Wiemajack who does it for you.

Anyway, the damn things breed - If you buy one, you'll have three within the year. They're unbeatable value no matter what county they started out in.

Great! Thanks for the advice, I tried to do research but alas have showed my inexperience haha. Time to do more research and start hitting the shops once snowmageddon passes over Ontario.
