I have this thingy that's 4 & 3/4" long with an opening at one end of approx. 5/8"; a cavity that goes all the way through to the closed other end. It's steel with an external spring loaded push lock on one side in addition to two lugs that appear to be locking lugs, also situated on the exterior body. I presume that this thingy is made to go over the muzzle of a military rifle.
See pics.
Would anybody know what function this thingy has and for what rifle ??
Thanks for any info.

Looks like it may be some sort of muzzle cover or something similar. How do you know if it's firearm related?

Being that it has two retaining lugs and a spring loaded keeper it could be for just about anything. At the plant I used to work at, we had similar covers over electrode plugs in dusty areas. They allowed acess to PLC ports for programming equipment modules.

Thanks guys. I solved the mystery of the "thingy" myself. Turns out it's the device that retains the firing pin & drive spring assy. on a Soviet RP46 and DPM MG and locks into the rear of the Soviet RP-46 & DPM receivers and then sticks out over the front top of the butt stock.
Cheers,
