If Savage brought out a newly designed lever gun, what would you like to see?

Ooops! I forgot about the Win. Model 88...

Anyway...

The Savage Model 99 has just about reached cult status amongst gun owners. I can't imagine why Savage would rather start over than go with an already proven winner.

Bring back the 300 savage, now that people are starting to recognize that you don't need screaming speed, the most efficient factory produced .30 cal cartridge could make a big comeback.

no more useless levers please.. i want a 350 yard capable lever.. this means plenty of killing power.. this means no silly 30-30 32specail no 44-40 ..scrap these..

what i want
-clip feed
-plenty of barrel length
-good wood
-243,260,308,25-06 6.5-06,30-06 and the wsm family
-stainless or blued options
-ajustable trigger
-no iron sights
-side eject
-good recoil pad
-hmmm switch barrels with the nut
-accurate
-replacment stocks, plastic, different colours of lamiante

these are what i want
NO MORE TUBE MAGS

I love traditional style levers, but if I wanted another I would probably just buy another Marlin, or a Winchester copy like Puma. I think the Browning 1895, or Winchester now is beautiful, but why not something new and less ugly than the 99 and BLR.

Most important, make it shoot something popular and accurate. I'm thinking box mag. as it's nice to carry spares and quick to load, and a one piece 0 drop (for scopes) laminate stock with a semi-pistol grip with medium large loop. Stainless barrel and action.

.300 Savage may be a nice round, but bring it out in more popular offerings first, like .308 which is also good.

I also like exposed hammers, which with longer lock time aren't quite as condusive to shooting small groups, but much preferable to me for hunting. Keep the compact bolt coming out the back of the receiver as well.

I like the idea about ease of single loading too.

In general, I would like to see something that addresses the shortcomings of some of the previous "modern" lever action designs.

-One-piece stock with comb height suitable for scope use
-Good trigger
-Easily field stripped to clean bore from breech.
-Open topped receiver so that the rifle can be just as easily single loaded through the top as by detachable magazine.
-Magazine length that is a good match to chamber throat dimensions.

While the rifle would primarily be designed for scope use, I would like to see a pop-up rear aperture sight like that seen on older Brno rifles.

I like this approach. Build on the idea that the 99 often approaches bolt gun accuracy, but make sure to take it further. I like the other point that came up about no iron sights. Given the current reputation, Savage should not bring out any gun/action that is not very accurate and easily scoped. I'd say stick to short actions, but yes, include the WSMs. It would be nice if there was a high end line of anything they brought out, with particularly good wood, and available in 250 and 300 savage, and maybe 375 Win as well (just my feeling). A non-nonsense hunter version in 308-based cartridges plus the WSMs, with some kind of matte/dull finished stainless (incl. trigrer assembly) and good composite stock might be another cool angle that the other available levers don't really fill.

I mentioned in another post that I saw a 250-3000 savage bolt in new condition at Gunco in Ottawa. Blue and wood nice looking piece.

One more thing: It should be competitive with existing lever actions in terms of dimensions; around a 20" barrel and a 6.5 lb weight. The end result should combine the best attributes of both bolt and lever actions.

look at the 300 savage and look at the 300 wsm .....

the wsm look like the savage pump up on steroids .

the new lever action should look similar to the old 99 ( including the old rotary magazine ) , except it is built around the wsm cartidges , maybe add a 6.5 and a 338 " savage " wsm maybe even a 458 " savage " wsm ....

as for weight , lighter is better , if it was 4 pounds , i'd learn to live with the recoil ( titanuim action anyone :D .

it would also have to have the same style of barrel nut attachment as the savage bolt actions ..... making the barrels interchangeable with the bolt actions .

i just want the trapper carbine to come back.

Right on! I think they could offer two models, one a short trapper carbine with 18" barrel in slower chamberings, maybe even handgun rounds, with adjustable open sights.

Then, a longer version with integral weaver scope mounts on receiver, 22 or 24" barrel, maybe even raised comb. This version could offer the 308, even WSM chamberings.

Both could be offered with wood, or laminate, or even synthetic, and in blued or stainless.

I'd say both clip fed for ease of use and manufacturing.

Finally, both versions with ACCUTRIGGER.

I'd buy a trapper carbine in 357 mag. or 500 S&W in stainless right now!

I say go big with four new models.

The Euro with full stock, Bavarian style in 7x57 and 6.5 Swede, 20" barrel.

The Brit with eg type fore stock, straight English butt stock in 303 Brit and 280, 22" barrel.

The American with raised Monte Carlo in 308 or 708 and a 24" barrel.

And the Classic built like a 1920s take-down with a better take-down system in 250 and 300 Savage.

I would centre my efforts on makng good less ugly bolt guns before going back to levers...if I was Savage.
I was thinking the same thing as that is why I haven't bought a Savage rifle in over ten years..
All they would have to do is make a longer cocking piece and sport a larger better looking bolt handle..
I may succumb to their new Lwt. rifle depending on the price..

As far as a Savage lever action goes, I would be surprised to see them make one..
