unknown ammo - possibly explosive

catchy thread name isnt it :p

alright so let me explain this one. I have a bullet in my possession that i would like to identify. It was give to me by my grandfather before he died. He was a French military Officer. Although his work was very secret, i know he has worked, among other things, for the French Naval Armament. He also traveled a lot to the former U.S.S.R. for work.

I only have the bullet, no casing. it is 5 inches long, about 1 1/2 inch diameter. As shown in the pictures, the head of the bullet has a couple of components which can be unscrewed, to reveal an internal pin. My best guess is its an explosive bullet, and the pin would detonate the charge upon impact.

although it is very thick and heavy, the bullet is hollow, which could mean space for the explosives to be put in.

There are no markings on the bullet. Its seems to made out of steel, with some brass components. Again i'm unsure of this, its an educated guess, i could be wrong.

Any of you ammo experts can help out in determining the nature of this bullet?

Got a digital caliper? If not, why not? They are available cheap, at CTire on sale.:)

Measure it in Millimeters. Looks like about 30mm. Lots of choices from there.

No rifling on the driving bands, so probably a pull, unfired. Or a pick off the production line, or a sample to show what was being done or could be done.

I would lean towards the latter, if he was involved in procurement and going by the polished state.

For what though? No idea. Aircraft gun, or similar.

Some measurments would be good.

The parts in the nose look like they are for impact detonation. I have a shell at home with the sharp pin in the base of the shell and pointing forward. On impact the shell slows and the inertial pin keeps going forward to fire the detonator. Yours seems to be the reverse of that so I assume the shell deforms on impact and drives the pin back into a detonator

The lack of any markings is odd, but from your description, it sounds like a fuzed 37mm anti-aircraft projectile. Doesn't look like anything Soviet, but plenty of countries produced 37mm AA ammo.
 
not really. it was my grandfathers, so some sentimental value here. I don't think its worth much anyways.. but just for the kick of knowing, how much do you think a collector would pay for one like that?

sorry to the other folks, i've been very busy and havn't had time to take said pictures of the bottom, nor buy a caliper to have a precise measurement. Will do my best to di it in the next couple of days when i get back in town.
 
Seen somewhat similar ogives, but minus the internals go for 2 bucks apiece at gun shows ... Assuming that a positive ID could happen, I'd say anywhere from 5 to 20 bucks.
