can a savage 99 be rebarreled to a 338 federal?

I am thinking of doing a similiar project, but making a WInchester model 100 carbine in 338 federal! I cannot see why this would not work in a Savage 99C, but you may run into problems with those rotary magazines? This is a great cartridge! Very under appreciated. I got onto this after a friend showed me his grouping on his gun and told me the ballistics! As I live in Thunder Bay ,the large cutovers are far and few between since the Paper industry disapeared, so long 300 to 500 yard shots are not anylonger the norm wich makes this 338 Federal a great intermidiate cartridge for moose and deer! Good luck I will let you know how my Winchester turns out!Dale Z in T-Bay

right on, I going to pick up 99 in 308 with a detachable mag.

If you are going to be buying factory ammo, I would caution that your project might not turn out how you want it to. I'm not familiar with all the lever actions, but I did have a Rem 760 rebarrelled to 338 Federal. With handloads it worked flawless, with factory ammo, it would not function properly.

Federal loads the factory ammo about 4000psi higher than the 308 or 358 win, and its enough to make extraction difficult. I would not build another one on anything but a bolt action. Go with the .358 if you want heavy bullets.
