How do you explain shooting coyotes to people?

I was out hunting last year with family and as we were leaving an area there was a coyote standing broadside on the trail. I went to raise my rifle and instead was chastised for it by the family members.

Now there was a very large open season for them with a No Bag Limit at the time.

I tried explaining about the Conservation side and they just weren't going to listen. They stated that I was to only shoot what I was planning to eat myself.

Well I got tired of arguing with them and let them have it since the coyote was long gone anyways.

i grew up trapping so i have no problem telling people i shoot furbearers for their hide. some people don't like that but i have no problem shooting a critter, skinning it out, keeping, selling, tanning or whatever the fur and tossing the rest.

You like hunting Deer, Rabbits, Grouse, etc?

If we don't kill as many coyotes as we can they will, and have had a huge negative effect on the populations of these animals you would rather hunt.

It's like fishing, and you catch an introduced species that is harmful to the natural fish in the water. You sure as hell don't throw it back. You kill it plain and simple.

Example: My cottage is on Superior and Sea Lampreys were absolutely destroying the trout fishing, so if you ever caught one, or a trout with one attached you killed it. Same issue with Zebra Mussels, and Gobi's, they are destructive species that need to be controlled, which boils down to killing as many as possible.

All it took in my family was a family member being confronted by one during her afternoon walk. Scared the crap out of her and now they want me to shoot them all.

Every dead coyote, fox, raccoon and skunk means more birds and other game. Any of them that are seen get taken care of. Now the explaining part... Most people I know are of the same mind, and those that aren't are often difficult or impossible to convince, so I don't bother with spending much time trying to explain it to them, mostly if they don't get it they won't get it.

Just get 'em in the sights...be sure of shot placement...pull trigger....The opposers have evidently not seen the mess these "dogs" can do to a sheep herd or young calf or calves. Often killing more than they can eat and leaving much behind when they leave. Also the attacks on humans seems to be on the rise.

Yup. When I bought my property, I never saw rabbits or grouse on it. Now that the yotes population has been controlled to a degree, I see at least 4 bunnies every day on my way to work. There are a lot more grouse around too. The only down side is that I've seen more racoons, but they'll be dealt with.

I like a few coyotes hanging about - they keep the feral cat population in check which in the long run helps the grouse and hare populations.

When fur prices are good I will shoot every coyote I see but leave them alone otherwise.

...

Yes, that's why the wolves do it. Kill or drive off predators that compete for the same prey. It's nature's way. Challenge anyone who complains: "What have you got against wolves?"

Another reason to shoot them is that it's great practice for meat hunting.

You should be asking them why they aren't shooting

I say my poor ol' lab was attacked by 4 blood thirsty coyotes a couple days ago. The ol bugger died in my arms and told me to make sure I kill every last one of the sonsa#####es......

Because they can have upto 19 pups in a litter.... & the ##### has already calculated on at least 15 of them getting either whacked, packed, sacked, smacked, cracked, tacked or thwacked. So you wouldn't want to disappoint her family planning, evolutionary mathematics now would you?

Imo they're still plotting to take over the world,,,,,,, & might dam well just do it with the growing army of PETA pooper pansies et al about.

Shooting coyotes are just like regular coyotes, except they like to go shooting.
