If you could only shoot one Choke for your Sporting Clay course what would it be?

Not you too? What is with all of these ‘if I could only do it one way’ threads?

My choice would be light modified.

I want to shoot more Sporting Clays in the Spring and the gun I plan on using has a fixed Mod. Choke. I don't want to get tubes put in it (because I hate them) so I may have the Mod. opened up. Just wanted opinions as to what Choke size.

IC with the proper ammo that is patterned in my shotguns, does fine up to 40 measured yards. Anything more and I use LM. With ammo I don't know (Europe & Africa) I shoot tighter.

Shooting Sporting Clays is much like golf. We use much of the same techniques: foot position, hand position, head down, look at the ball (target), follow trough. Then, depending on distance, we change clubs or in our case, chokes. One does not use the long distance driver to put or chip! So, we don't use Xfull for rolling rabbits at 20 feet!

Use what you have TESTED at the distances that you expect to shoot. You then can make a valid choice of load/choke combiantion, like in golf.

Or, you can use Bruce Buck's method of: Close, Medium and Far. And you choke accordingly!

Henry:cool:

It wouldn't be the end of my world if I was limited to a modified. It would be my second choice and I'd rather too much choke than too little.

Because you hate tubes, I will not suggest a lock breacher choke or one of those chain saw things. :D

If you have a gun you like with modified, I would try it that way before I had it reamed.

or you could do what the trap fudds do- choke for smoke -

I shot a fixed choke Win.101 for years that was M/F. I was competitive and even after having screw chokes added, didn't see a big difference in my score.

It did give me confidence in tighter chokes over open chokes. I would shoot the mod. choke to see how you do. If you see more longer targets in your area it my be fine. It may also will force you to concentrate on the close ones. Some people like that others don't

I don't want to pull this topic off too far on a tangent but aren't choke results influenced by the amount and type of shot you are putting out? In my guns the modified choke results look pretty sparse at 40 yards with 1 oz loads and even sparser, if this is a word, with 7 1/2 shot and just forget IC. Light modified might be very interesting from this point of view.

In my Sporter, it would be a pair of IC's. I have the most confidence in these chokes of hitting whatever target I have seen thrown so far. I have NOT patterned the gun for fear it may show some anomily and ruin my confidence or have me second guessing.

As it is a double with tubes, I do make use of and change chokes as I see fit for the presentation.

Scott, you are talking a single barreled auto or pump, yes ? An SX-1 ?

If so, and if you had three barrels for an SX-1 in Skeet, IC and Full or Imp Mod........ well I bet you could change barrels pert near as fast as I could change 2 chokes.

Tim.

well i can only do it one way ... full choke ... both my shotguns are fixed choke..
nothing like a poof of clay powder when you really hit the clay.

Tim it is an SX-1 with the 28" Mod barrel.

If you have a mod. I would suggest all you may need is a skeet and mod. As Gil Ash intructs his student who do not wish to carry a choke for each specific distance. All you have to decide is choke it or don't choke it. Out to 25 do not choke it. Over 25 choke it. Slightly over 25 yards IC would be ideal but at that range the modified is starting to open up to just about as large as IC. Somewhere around 30-35 yards IC is spreading thin but mod is still tight enough to way past that distance. Two chokes. Choke it or don`t.

Extra barrels aren't cheap 200-$300 if you can find them. I will try the Mod. and if it is not suitable I will open it up to LM.

I sent one of my super x1 skeet barrels to briley a few years ago and had the tubes fitted. It was the best 250.oo I have spent on a x1.
In the day the barrels were under 100. I still have one in the original box. I should have bought 50 of them at the time better return than rrsp.

Did you send your barrel to Canada or Texas to have fitted? When buying tubes I have had really good service from the Texas guys. Had them here within a week. I think I may have import problems sending them a barrel?
