I am looking to take a trip to quebec this fall to go moose hunting. I have looked over the website for hunting in quebec and it seems as though i can just buy a non resident license and go in the zone that i buy for . Is this how it works?

I think you're asking if you can hunt without a guide or a resident. If this is your question, then, yes, basically, you can.

You will find all you need to know to hunt in Québec at the following site:

The problem I can see is trying to find a "safe" place to hunt when you're not from the area. You never know who / where someone will stand when the hunting season goes on, because most of the time, you have no occasion to scout the place first. Going to outfitters and or gvt wildlife reservations is much safer and you may get more chance to shoot a moose.

X2 .... If you know people here that can team up with you and post a sign at a local ZEC then fine .... Otherwise you want to go thru an outfitter. Pricey, but a hellovalot safer and that way you don't get to step on anybody's toes ...

ZEC is an acronym for Zone d'Exploitation Controlee. A glorified provincial park that people get to hunt and fish into. You have to tell the people at the gate which lake/area you want to hunt or fish into, paty the appropriate fees, and you're off to the races. Unless your choice is already taken, at which point you'll be told what is still available. Basically like an outfitter, but generally without the fancy guide or shack, run by the Provincial Government. You also have to produce a detailed report of your catch/kills when you check out.

Explain? Is the ZEC not like crown land here is Ont, other than paying to hunt it.This leaves you free to hunt anywhere on that ZEC?

I see. This would explain the sighns on branch roads with camp names/numbers before the hunt starts.

Do the ones with camps get their area guranteed?

As Rob mentioned, make sure you have the required number of "tags" in your hunting party. I know they local CO's have been enforcing this quite a bit the last few years.

Saying that your buddy is on his way... or that he left that morning are not acceptable excuses...

ZEC are some kind of COOP and yes, usually the members have the first choice.

ok thanks. I think we are just going to be hunting in zone one and I looked over the website and that was how I thought it worked but I just wanted to make sure I didnt miss anything.
