Hi everyone, I would like to show pics of my good friend's Maxim machine gun. I was inspired after reading another post on this here and remembered my buddy having this in his basement. I really know nothing about these, but they are really fascinating pieces of hsitory. Please feel free to comment:).
This was found several decades ago buried in a gravel pit by kids before being given to my friend. It retains what appears to be some of it's original paint. It is non-functional, of course. Thanks for looking:)

Thanks Gentlemen, I am grateful for the experts and historians who frequent this board and hope they can give us some information. This one appears not to be unit marked. Other than surely WW1 German I have no idea on anything else. WW1 is about one war too early for me to understand what we have. And although it has been made non-functional, it looks great on a bookshelf!
 
Beautiful find. Your friend is very fortunate. I've thought about trying to acquire a dewatt Maxim to go with my Finn Mosins but the cost has held me back.
 
I need to be digging through gravel pits I think! I tried to get my friend to drag it to the last gun show, but it was just too damn big to haul around for hours.

In 1919-20 "The Committee on War Records and Trophies" distributed 2500 German MGs to municipalities, schools, museums etc.
 
Is there a list of what went where? I have heard this but have seen no documentation. Than ks very much for this!
Imagine a Maxim in the Tropy case at your school!! I would love it!

Maxims are certainly one of the most important military arms ever

It is said that Maxims have killed more people in war than any other weapon except the sword....probably not true, but hey

I have been lucky to get my greasy mitts on 2 examples-A Russian Finn capture and a 08/15 Canadian capture

Damn I'm loving the look of that MG08/15. It looks like she was picked up off the battlefield yesterday.

That butt plate does not look to be comforting against your shoulder when you are firing. I would imagine many a MG gunner in the German army during WW1 had sore and bruised shoulders from firing the MG 08/15s. Does the butt stock have a hollow area inside it to accept a cleaning or jam free kit ?

Wow the mg 08 looks like it could tell afew stories if it could talk ... nice piece, the guy that carved that into the stock prob. had a love hate relationship with her .
