So I am thinking of going on a caribou hunt and thinking of taking my 257 wby...

So you guys think this is enough gun with 117 grain bullets about 3400 fps?

Are they much bigger than a good sized Ontario Buck deer?
Thanks

Holy crap - how are you wringing 3400 out of a 117gr bullet in a 257wby? Mine can't do that....well....it MIGHT...but I suspect it'd be a one shot affair and someone might read the chronograph during the investigation at the gun range into why I'm laying there DEAD with gun metal all around and in me....

At any rate - it's sufficient gun for caribou. Even at 3200fps with a 115gr.

works on moose so in my limited exprerence on bou i would say it will work. caribou are one step up from deer just a bit longer than a deer.

a 100gr ttsx through the shoulders and it will be lights out!

Caribou are the ruffed grouse of big game....it doesnt take alot of gun to kill one. All that matters is far you think you may be shooting. A buddy of mine lived in northern quebec for years told me he killed more than he could count with his 22-250 and I believe him. All my friends who have hunted them have come home and said there 30-06's, 308's etc were too much gun in all reality.

I have a 257 WM with a 26'' barrel and I get 3500 with 110gr and 3400 with 115 gr so it seems normal as far as the nosler reloading book shows.

I think I've shot 4 barren ground caribou with a 257 Weatherby.

Three with 100 grain Ballistic Tips and one with a 100 grain Barnes X.

Everyone seems to think caribou are elk sized. Barren ground caribou are not much bigger than a mature mule deer.

Mountain caribou are much bigger but a 257 would work quite well I think.

If they are packed in tight watch you don't get more than 1 when you shoot. You will have lots of gun. My buddy got 2 with one shot from a 25-06.

Thanks guys. 257 wby it is then. I bought a bunch of 117 gr Hornady BTSP I think they should do the trick. Looks like IMR 7828 should shove em out fast enough

Saw a hunter crank one(central barren ground bou) I think we ranged it at 280yrds 120 grain partition, the round hit dead center on the shoulder blade ya not the best placement but all the bull did was raise up on his hind quarters for what seemed like minutes but was most likely 10 or 20 seconds then fell over deader than disco. The little bullet shattered on the blade but absolutely destroyed the heart & lungs . I was blown away what that little cal could do seen a few more on whitetail deer as well little lightning bolt of a caliber.

Just make sure and use a sturdy bullet...I watched a buddy of mine shoot a 'bou with a 257wm using regular remchester factory loaded rounds, when we skinned it all I can say is WOW...The shot was just under 300 yards, he hit it in the shoulder, went down quick but the whole side of the animal, from the front of the shoulder to the front of the hind quarter was jello!! Heck, it was even bloodshot below the knee, i've never seen anything like that before or since...

Ya you are 100% right on that one with a small cal & fast speeds you have to make sure you are shooting quality bullets.

You're right.

I shot a large mountain caribou in the Yukon last fall with a 270gr 375cal TSX at 80yds. MV was 2700fps. NO BLOODSHOT MEAT AT ALL ... NONE!

I'd be very tempted to use a heavier bullet with less velocity.
