Best practice target ammo?

I'll be out of Federal Gold Medal .22 sometime soon. It shot fairly well, but threw a lot of flyers. My gun did not like feeding it though, it was always hanging up when chambering. I don't think it justifies the price it commands, being pretty much the same stuff as Federal Champion.

Today I tried some Lapua Scoremaster, what a difference. Fed smoothly, and grouped much tighter. They don't make it anymore, but that experience has led me to start looking for a new brand.

In your experience, what has been the best ammo for around/under $500/case?

Here are the options I am thinking of trying out, so far:
S-K (Lapua) Standard plus
Eley Sport
Eley Club
RWS Club
RWS Target Rifle
Remington Target
Winchester Target

This is for 100yd practice, toward long-range centrefire shooting. Shooting a Savage Mk.II, nothing special but it is accurate.
 
When I tested ammo two years ago, Lapua Super Club and Eley Target Rifle Pistol, were close to the same for about that price. No experience with RWS but it should be good. In general with the Lapua SK stuff the higher the quality the better it should shoot. The only thing changing is the quality control. I found Remington Target to be poor. Remington Sub Sonic HP shot fairly well for me, and was actually better than some of the bottom end Eley. CCI SV is not too bad either if you can find it.
 
SK Standard Plus works reasonably well. If you can test several batches and choose the pick of the litter - it will give greater satisfaction and show fewer unexplained errant shots. This goes for any ammo but there seems to be a good supply of this available right now. Hirsch Precision or North Sylva have this.
 
My Anschutz 1913 free rifle really likes RWS and really dislikes Lapua -- I've never shot SK or Eley in it.

Like others have mentioned in other threads, buy 50-100 rounds of as many different lines as you can and see which groups best and then buy as much of that as you can get your hands on.

I tried Standard Plus and Eley Sport against the Gold Medal today at 100 yards. Huge difference between gold medal and the others. Gold medal had groups of 3" or larger with vertical stringing. Sport and Standard Plus did much better, with the Eley printing 1" groups and the Standard Plus trailing slightly behind. I'm sure a better rifle and less wind would have produced better results, but these are the conditions I'll be shooting in. I will have to try RWS later.

So, where do you guys get this stuff? A friend just told me about target shooting products, they seem to have a lot of what I'm after but not everything I want to try. Who else in Canada sells reasonably-priced quality rimfire?
 
Peter at Hirsch is a great guy to deal with. You should also call Peter Krause at North Sylva / Target Shooting Products -- I buy my RWS from them and they also import Eley.

cci sv works great for me , the green flag for matches, if you're getting the odd flyer weigh the ammo, if your serious always weigh your ammo
 
Can't speak to the others but Eley sport is great at 50, not so good at 100, test a few boxes before buying in bulk. fwiw
 
You have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. The price of the ammo means nothing. Some rifles will shoot inexpensive ammo better than the high priced stuff.
The ammo also has to cycle the action of a semi-auto. That doesn't apply to your Savage, of course.
 
Your pretty easy going to say it shot well, but threw a lot of flyers and didn't feed properly. LOL Should be easy to duplicate that degree of quality.


I also tried Federal Gold Match and didn't think it was anything special. I do just as well with American Eagle 38gr.
 
I favor the Eley Sport over SK Std. Plus for ammo in that price range. I get less flyers with it at longer distances. At $47/brick, it's tough to beat for practice ammo. Eley Target (Yellow box) is pretty good too, it's discontinued, but there is still quite a bit of it floating around.
