If they didn't have tags, then it would have been hunting without a license/poaching. But yeah, it would be interesting to read the court transcripts.

I am no expert on poaching but if you don't use your tag on a downed animal you are poaching,you can call it what you want I will call it poaching.They did not fix there tag to the animal,perhaps some need a road map to see what they were going to do next,why are we so protective of these sort of people?????
I am sorry is OK not to us your tags not a big deal to most,cant wait for turkey season I think 20 will be the number this year,one tag 20 turkey sounds right to me!!Next fall one tag 20 deer no limits needed. PS they are still poaching call it what you want if it makes us feel better.If you are not going to use your tag why bother to buy a license just go anytime you want no season needed no limit lets get them all!

If you kill the animal, tag the animal, it's simple math folks.
No tag on dead deer when the CO is present, you get busted........... too bad , so sad.

Excellent post, couldn't agree more.
This fall we were dressing a deer at the edge of a lake. We like to give em a dunk in the cold water after, washes everything out and cools the meat real quick. Well when we did that the tag came off in the water! Sounds dumb now but we were not focused on the tag at the time. Now if we were not able to retrieve that tag we were all in agreement that if we were stopped by a CO we would have charges coming and would have deserved them. OUR responsibility to ensure that that tag is affixed to that animal and notched out properly.
It really isn't that difficult to mind that you don't tear the tag off during a drag - I hunt with some old guys that have been at it for over 40 years, they are conscientious and have never had a problem. If some guys on here are that worried about ripping a tag off wrap it in clear packing tape, or wrap and tape a plastic bag around it.
This is YOUR responsibility as a hunter. If you don't like it, don't hunt.
This is really easy. Look at it from the CO's point of view - animal on the ground, no tag affixed = charge.
I have been hunting for 30 years and have never seen a tag come off from dragging or getting it wet the glue on these things is tough.We've dragged deer up ridges over beaver dams thru tag alters never seen one come off.Seen them get mangled but not to the point they weren't secure and legible.

Yes, I was concerned as well but in over 40 years the other members have not had any trouble. Your theory is sound, but in practice we have had no trouble. One of our guys is a butcher as well.

I'm not calling it anything except failing to attach a tag. Neither are the CO and the judge. YOU are calling it poaching.........or whatever YOU want.

You gotta be careful when you hear stories like this of so called "Innocent" hunters becoming victims of MRN officers on their high horse. Any responsible hunter knows you shoot it, tag, dress it and THEN take it. If they had actually had tags with them i can understand the MNR officer going easier on them, but for all three men to get charged $4650 i find it very hard to believe they were innocent and had just forgot to place the tags on.
