I'm currently running a Vortex red dot on my Norc M4, but I want BUIS as well. I'm leaving the front site as is, just interested in a rear site. I noticed that there are rear folding versions and non-folding versions made by NCSTAR and others. My question is, does the fact that the folding versions don't have elevation adjustment matter? The non-folding versions are adjustable for BOTH elevation and windage.

Why bother, unless you like the look. Your SPARC is 2moa, a buis is about 8moa-ish........you will be sighting the buis to your sparc anyways.....so whatever floats your boat :D

Depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to use it for a backup, then, no, it doesn't matter if it doesn't have elevation. Since you're using a red dot, it'd be good enough to the ranges the red dot is good to.

The standard front sight has elevation adjustment, that is likely why some BUIS do not. "Official" procedure is to adjust elevation zero with the front sight only.

The only problem is that with the given load you are using, you may not be able to get a zero with the front sight alone I guess, depending on how much adjustment there is.

Why bother?...Well it seems like a good idea to have some type of site system if the batteries die in my Strikefire while I'm at the range and I forgot to pick up spares, etc..also, same concern if the zombies come;):D

First off, almost zero AR15 iron sights are adjustable for elevation at the rear. All elevation adjustment is done to the front sight post. If there is an adjustment wheel there, it is likely a bullet drop compensator. Like this:

Second, in my opinion, it is always a good idea to have an iron sight on your rifle. Batteries fail, optics break, may as well back it up.

If you are thinking about rear sights, may as well choose the most versatile. Always think about the future. You may want a lager optic for longer range shooting. The folding sights can allow the rear of a magnified optic to extend over top and still remain attached to the rifle. Then, if there is a need the optic can be removed and the iron deployed.

The non-folding designs are limited in that if you wish to use anything other then a single power optic, you must remove the sight from the rifle, and re-attach it when you need it. As well, if your sight is always up, you will always have that iron sight cluttering your sight picture. Some guys like it others do not.

Lastly, if you are going to skimp on costs anywhere, don't do it on sights! They are a critical part of the rifle. Save and buy something good, even if it is just going on a Norc.

Something to think about.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at NCSTAR and MAGPUL folding rear sites on-line and they are affordable to me...didn't want to spend more then $100 for sure. Do you or anyone else have any negative feedback on these brands? Are they good enough to go with. Thanks.

I got the Magpul on my Norc M4 and i love it ;)

Bought mine from Blaxsun here on CGN.

I'm using a set of magpul sights on my shotgun right now. They are very good for what they are. I would recommend them over other cheap Chinese made sights.

My only experience with NC Star was a barrel wrench I bought in an emergency. The lugs promptly sheered off because the steel was too soft. I will never buy another product from them again.

Go with the magpul MBUS. If you order direct from Brownells, you can get the rear for around $50 bucks plus shipping if you don't mind a bit of a wait. If you want one now, many dealers have them in stock for about $80 plus tax and shipping.

Keep in mind that non-folding models will be more durable, I had a midwest industries break on me from everyday use. If you are running magnified optics it's pretty much the only way to go if you need the sight on 24/7.

If you've got time to swap sights (ie, on the range, for example) I'd go with the LMT unit or just the plain old detachable carry handle. If you zero it properly and mark your come ups, you can still reach out and touch your targets.

That reminds me, when I was down in Arkansas at AFSAM the Danish team had Elcans on from 4/500 to 100m then as we started moving in from there they whipped out their Aimpoints and swapped right in the middle of the course of fire. It was pretty snazzy to see.

I went with the Magpul as well; good quality and won't break the bank.

I also bought mine from Blaxsun and highly recommend him to anyone; great service.
