Hey guys,

As some of you have seen I recently came into possession of a Type 38 Arisaka. Well now im on the hunt for a Type 99. They dont seem to common up here, does anyone have any sort of input into how much one of these go for? scrubbed vs intact mum etc...?

I am thinking of putting some things up for sale/trade and I need to know how much of my stuff has to go :p

He have the anti aircraft sight on. Stock seem refinished, seem's to be an early or mid war production. The later type 99 know as "last ditch rifle" are supposedly crudly made, even the metallurgy quality is apparently suspect since they were made late war. Type 99 are quit scarce. price should be 450+ depending on condition and how bad you want one.

I picked a Type 99 up a couple of years ago. It came with the bayonet, mum was ground, and it was missing the bolt cover, but it had the aircraft sights intact.

I really wanted one for my collection, so I figured what the hell, like you said, you don't see them up here very often.

Paid $455 plus shipping including the bayonet, which goes for around $80 in eBay. So I figured I did ok. Its a Nagoya series 6, which dates it to 1943.

Sounds like you did very well!

Sounds like Arisaka Syndrome is even more virulent than Mosinitis :).

About the only 99s that came into Canada commercially were surplus from China or Korea. Some of the ones from China were pretty grim. Probably some have come up from the US, where they are much more common. In general, Japanese small arms are not all that common here.
The only Japanese rifle I have is a "Special Navy Rifle", which is quite rare. No idea how it survived, and how it got to Canada.
Many years ago, I saw a Nambu lmg for sale. It had pock marks from fragments on the receiver, and the barrel cooling fins had been grazed by a bullet.

Type 99 rifles pop up in gun shows now and then, my buddy picked one up in mint condition, minus mum for $99.00 at the Kamloops gun show last year.He figures it was unisued? Then again everytime we go to a gun show deals fall in his lap!

I have two 38s, and two 99s (one early and the other mid production) and a 38 carbine in need of a new stock.
One of my 99s has the original rubberized canvas sling, with Japanese letters on the inside.

Sounds like quite the rounded Japanese collection! very nice Al!!

Speaking of Japanese characters, my Special Navy Rifle has the characters for "Nakamura" in pencil in the barrel channel just in front of the receiver. I assume that he assembled the rifle.

I found a Type 99, chrome bore, with MUM intact, monopod, AA sights, dust cover all matching original finish. Overall condition is excellent. It was definitely a collector's peice, and in all the years I have collected (albeit not Japanese firearms), I have never seen a better example for sale. So when it came up, I bought it, and paid twice as much as what has been quoterd here. Am I a fool? Porbably:), but correct and unmolested peices for sale do not frequent every gun show or internet exchange in Canada. If I did not buy it someone else would have.
I have no regrets on the money I spent on it, as it is a prized piece in my collection and I know it would be difficult to upgrade.
Happy collecting:)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with paying a premium for condition, particularly when specimens in only fair to good condition are not common.

Joe, I agree with everything you said, minus the fool part. Your rifle is better then the pieces I have seen in museums, anyone would be proud to own such a rifle and piece of history.
