Ok, since my hopes of getting a Marlin 925 has been dashed, I have to start looking around again....

ANYWAYS, the core question here is- Is .22 Mag a popular round? Can it he had at, say, CT, or a local outfitter? As well, similar to using shorter shotgun shells in a longer action; could a .22LR be safely used in a .22 Mag?

Data Stamp on the barrel. Read it, follow it, don't deviate from it. There seems to be some temptation to "test the water" where rimfires are concerned, but the potential for damage/injury is huge when you tinker with using ammunition that differs from what's indicted on the data stamp.

I'm not one for "let's have more rules", but I sort of wish this sort of discussion was discouraged on CGN. There seems to be some traction with these conversations in the rimfire forum, but you don't hear anyone (in other forums) ask questions like; "can I shoot a .223 round in a gun chambered for .22-250?" Anyone here like gambling with their eyes...or even their lives?

Not trying to be over-dramatic, but there is no such thing as a "minor" gun-related accident.

Shoot safe everyone.

The cartridge case is a different size, so the chamber size isnt correct. Some revolvers offer interchangeable cylinders so that you can chamber both cartridges in the same gun by swapping cylinders, but with a chamber specifically made for 22WMR you should not attempt to shoot 22LR even though it might drop in.

There are a number of cartridge/chamber combinations that are safe, regardless of calibre stamping (e.g. .38 Special in .357 Magnum), but this is not one of them. .22 WMR chamber diameter is too big for .22 S/L/LR, as it is a lengthened .22 WRF case.

kinda figured on the about the cross-use.
What about the .22 Mag though? Is it a popular round? I'm asking cause a friend wants to get rid of his (I went and fired it today- it had a heavy trigger on it, but it shot good)

The 22 magnum ammo is considerably more expensive than standard 22LR ammo and that alone might deter someone from shooting it a lot. On the other hand, 22 magnum is more effective on small game.

For a close-range, small game hunter~I think it's great. As a pop-can/target/plinking round, I think it gets a little expensive compared to .22lr.

I like my .22lrs best, then .17HMR.... .22 mag is at the bottom of my personal list of rimfires, but to each his own. Truth is, I want them all! :)

22 mag is considerably pricier than the 22lr. However it is available at your local Chinadian Tire, as well as Wally Worlds that sell ammo.
I am a big fan of the 22mag. Yes it costs more, but you are still getting 50 rounds per box as opposed to 20 rounds of center fire.
Greater range, just a little more pop, and as others have already commented; decent on small game.

Keep your eyes open for ammo sales and it is not that bad. The key is to stock up when the price is right.
I recently purchased 22WMR from Wal-Mart for $9/box. I took the six boxes left on the shelf.

My 0.02¢

You can get it most places that sell ammo, only a few places will sell you "bricks" of .22 Mag. The .22 Magnum is a neat cartridge but it isn't really a good plinker due to ammunition cost. If your buddies rifle is a good shooter why not buy it and try it out.

I think .22 Mag is about 5 times the price of .22LR

i let a fellow borrow my 22mag for some varmets around his barn . he fired 5 22 long rifle shells out of the gun and had two bullets get stuck in the barrel . i got the gun back with a nice bulg in the barrel . i got lucky as it is a marlin and i found a barrel here for 60$ delivered cost me another 20$ to have it changed . so some 22wm can fire 22long rifles shells but thy were not ment for it and it could be dangers . this fellow did not understand the diff between 22lr and 22 win mag . my bad luck . it worked ut very well in the end for me as i got a very good barrell and it turned this littel gun in to a tack driver . so no dont shoot 22 lr in a winmag rifle DUTCH

Hold on, cost you? My buddy would be paying for that damage.;)

I love 22WMR, but don't shoot it much because of price. I however shop carefully and always buy 22WMR when price is right, careful shopping seem to bring the cost of ammo to that of expensive target 22lr price range. But then, with all that carefull shopping I have a huge stockpile of 22WMR in my locker, too many different brands and rifle will have to be sighted in for each one of them. So at the end, I still wasted a lot of money on ammo.

If you are a new shoter I'd say leave it alone for now. You need a lot of trigger time and the only way to get it is by shooting 22lr. Also, consider wether you will ever hunt with it, because the only advantage of 22WMR is if you go hunting. I got mine a year ago and rifle hasn't seen any action until early December last year, say, good 10 month. And the only kill was a grouse from about 15 yards. So you tell me was it a good buy or not. Consider your situation, realistically.

the main use i'd use it for right off would be target shooting, but in the next year or so i'd like to get into hunting small game (rabbits, and if luck be with me; fox and 'yotes)
surprisingly my local canadian tire doesn't stock WMR, or at least I didn't see it in the display.

Pretty solid post......a lot of good points ! :yingyang:

Personally, I'd rather by a pack of Winchester 333 (.22 LR) for a couple of dollars more than it takes to buy 50 rounds of WMR...

People complain about the price of .22Mag WAYYY to often IMO. They cost about half of what you pay for 20 centre fire rounds and your getting 50 .22mag rounds. And they pack more bang then a .22LR so obv they are gonna cost you more money.

I am sure some of you out there paper punch with .223Rem...and compared with .22LR its alot more expensive....see my point? Compare anything against the .22LR and its gonna be a huge difference.
