I am looking for a scope for my 342 Savage. It is one with the side mounts 3/4" Needs to be good out to 200 yards.
I was going to try the Tasco 3X7 off my .22 but I would have to break the rings to get it out.

Thanks guys

I have an old Weaver J4 on my 250 and really like it. They are 3/4" tube but some have a 7/8 objective. (belled at the front). For being so old I was very impressed with how bright and crisp the view is compared to a typical 3/4 scope.

There is another one here I just got with the fine cross hair, it will be nice for target work. The one currently on the 250 has a post crosswire which is great for hunting but not so much for shooting groups. Not sure if there were any double crosshairs available in this scope or not.

I have a B4 on my Great Grandfather's T-bolt and it is a blurry POC. Even on a bright sunny day it was horrible. If you can get to a gun show and find a J4 in decent shape you will be suprised. Dim shooting light will be a challenge regardless. The Weaver 330 I had was as dim as the B4 as well.
Haven't looked through a 29S.

If you aren't worried about "period correct" I believe it was a Redfield on my Uncle's BL22that was pretty good. No idea if it would like a center fire or not.

Hi Noel:
I too have an old Weaver J4 scope. I got it from Ellwood Epps in the early 60's when he was in Clinton, On. Originally it was on a Savage Model 23 bolt action .218 Improved Bee but now it is on a Savage M340 .222.
Do you know roughly how old theses scopes are?

Well got bored wanted to play. So I removed the rings off the Tasco 3x7 mounted it. I took the little Hornet out and put 20 rounds through it. I guess my reloading was good they all fired anyway. got the scope sighted in pretty good, have to wait for all this snow to go to do any real shooting.

I think the J4 was previous to the crosshairs (reticule) staying in the centre of the scope when they were adjusted for sighting. The mounts were off on mine, from poor gunsmith drilling, and the reticule being off centre really bugged me.

I think the design started in the 30's somewhere but really cannot say for sure. Some weaver designs like this got upgraded to the male threaded caps in the 40's(?)
Some designs for rimfires and also the budget market stayed with the exposed turrets right through the 60s. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here!

Right you are Bruce. I haven't found it too much of a nuisance but my rifle seems to be tapped straight.
