Found an old catalog

That catalogue shows a Makarov on the front cover.

I'm curious if it had any for sale inside and what their country of origin, price and condition was?

Now you guys know what I paid for a lot of my stuff!! Sure, some of those guns were dirt cheap, even compared to today. I remember getting in 5 unissued Lee Enfields, the "Irish contract" babies. Crates of surplus ammo, oh man, did that stuff ever look good!

:mad:If our stupid bureaucrats had the slightest clue, they would let us have all the imported ammo we could afford. Also, instead of destroying 15,000+ RCMP revolvers, they could have sold them to us and used the money to build some shelters for homeless and abused people. Oh no, that would have showed common sense and some responsibility - can't have that!!

I bought my first Chinese SKS from them for 89 bucks. I'm thinking that it was late 80s or early 90s. I was maybe 25 and didn't have a lot of cash back then, or the foresight for shooting and collecting. Just having a decent rifle and the cash to go hunting was a challenge.

You are right on the M&Ps, they would make a nice addition to any collection. Still have any Contract rifles in the mummie wrap Kjohn?

In that catalog, you could find East German Makarovs at $159.95 excellent cond, with 1 spare mag and shoulder holster or german issue Makarov but russian manufactured for $164.95 same cond and accessories. the chinese vesion called ZHONG ZHOU model 59 was $179.95 new in box with 1 spare mag and cleaning rod.:)

fixed it for you...

During this time I handled an East German Makarov at, you won't guess,

Le Barons in Montreal (le barons was a great store once, not as miserable and rotten as they are today).

The East German Makarovs were very well made and in as new condition.

The rifles were stolen in 2000. I had two of them, one still wrapped. I got them back, but the one that was wrapped came back unwrapped, and the magazine, bayonet, and scabbard were missing on one. Both still unfired. Beautiful rifles, they are.

Much is made about whether this rifle or that rifle has increased in value or not. If you are buying military surplus rifles, don't hesitate to buy if you see one that tickles your fancy. I have enjoyed collecting for over 45 years now, and don't actually worry too much about what some of the rifles are worth.

The pleasure of acquiring (a high falluting term for buying:p) them, showing them to people, taking them out and shooting with them, and just plain fondling them does it for me. The internet has widened the area of interest for me. Now I can sit down and research items of interest in an instant.

To be able to tap into the living libraries found in such as people like "smellie" and many others is just plain mind boggling. Seeing posts like this scan of an old catalogue is one of the many pleasures of "collecting".

True, i forgot to mention East german:redface: I bought fews milsurp and accessories from Century, had great service, damn sounds like was yesterday....good memories:)

I remember those K98 Mausers when Things Military in Calgary (1994-95) brought in about 15-20 feet of them on the vertical gun racks on the walls. Lots had the eagles peened, Many different codes, most were mismatch, but if you looked hard enough you could find bolts matching to the receiver and a decent bore.

To the guys who are so hot for the PTRS/PTRDs, it was only 5 years ago that they were at several different dealers here in Canada for about that same price on the PTRD. The PTRS usually ran in the mid 2K area. I bought one of each, but sold them when I got my Boyes rifle....a far better piece of machining.

Arrrgh!:runaway:

Oh, am I ever kicking myself for not picking a few of them up.:(

Those East German Makarovs are supposed to be the nicest ones.

From that catalog, I would have liked to have bought a dozen EG Maks and a crate of Fazakerley Enfields.:D

I've seen a training video for the Boys rifle and it seemed really impressive.:)

I'd like to see a modern version made in .50 BMG with the mag on the bottom (I'm a southpaw.)

They look way stronger than a Barret.

I have a 1984 catelogue from S.I.R. Mail Order here in Winnipeg (Cabela's now). It lists items like Romanian or Hungarian AKMs and Finnish Valmets for sale. Valmets were brand new and AKMs were semi autos not surplus.
