A Good Hunting Round? I was heading towards 30.06 but the rifle I really want has .308 for it's biggest chambering. I will be hunting, Blacktail Deer, Black Bear, Elk, and possibly Mountain Lion.

Thank you for your time.

308 for Deer and bear yes.

Elk and mountain lion, I have no personal experience. Jim Zumbo who writes about elk hunting would say 308 is borderline.

Didnt for several decades the 30-30 regularly poll is the most popular Elk round in the US? People like Zumbo seem to think animals have gotten tougher as time goes on.

It is plenty to kill. Question you should ask yourself is how far you intend to shoot.
If you are 200/300m hunter you good to go.

I'd take the 308 over the 30-06 any day.

Seriously though the 308 will do the job without a problem and The VTR looks nice... I have both calibres but I lean towards the 30.06 a bit though...

just to give you an idea how LITTLE difference between the 308 and the 06- the 06 typically burns 10 more grains powder to give you 200 fps more- the mbr for the 308 is 267, the 06 is 276 with 180 grain bullets- so you sneak 10 yards closer with the 308- we ALL can do that, can't we?- where the 06 REALLY shines is when you get OVER 180- the bullet isn't sitting in the powder, and the 1/10 twist handles the heavier bullets better- but WHAT do you need heavier than 180's for?- maybe elk nad big bears, and then you should be into 338 territory anyway
