To settle a fight with a buddy...can you use .223Rem on deer in Ontario? I say no. I do not want to get into the it works but you shouldn't deal that happens on the forum just if you LEGALLY can.

Thanks, UTAF

I think you can use a .223 in BC also. Here in Alberta, you cannot. Mininum is .243

Actually the regs don't say specifically .243 is the minimum...

it is unlawful to use for the purpose of hunting big game:
* ammunition of less than .23 calibre,

...but practically speaking it would be the .243.

Funny the dozen or more Wt's my Dad shot in Ontario over the years ,with my 55gr handloads all died one shot each and 3 bears from a lowly .222 Harold

Yes,

In theory, even my .22 Hornet would also be legal for deer, but I'd only use it for that purpose if my life depended on it.

I'd have to take a closer look at the ON regs, but I think that you might even be required to be carrying a license for deer, bear or moose if hunting with a centrefire in an area during a rifle season for those animals. So in theory, if I'm hunting small game with my Savage 24 with Hornet barrel (also came in .223) and 12 ga lower barrel during the five day moose season in mid Oct, I could theoretically be charged with poaching if I'm carrying Hornet cartriges and haven't a moose tags.

I've heard of COs in my neck of the woods years ago charging a couple of hunters who suspiciously claimed to be hunting rabbits in the woods sometime during the winter with Mini-14s. Coyotes weren't yet common back then, and they were probably poaching deer.

So in addition with being able to hunt deer with .223, do check to see what other big game seasons exist in the area and read up on or ask for clarification about hunting with it during those seasons.

Regards,

Frank

Ontario always seems to be a special case for some reason.
But myself if I was one of those bona fide bunny hunters, I would insist that the judge decides "he-said, she-said" at a trial.
Probably does not cut it in my books.

223's for deer......Aieesh....What next? Guys will be talking about using "premium" bullets like tsx's or something on deer........

One of the few TSX's I've recovered, and I've been trying pretty hard to catch one.

Mind you, it weren't me that caught this one. Was my gf's first buck. Bullet weighed 45 grains when it exited the barrel, and weighed 45.1 grains last night by my scale.

Waited till he turned broadside, and at 161 yards she punched him square into the close side shoulder.....Mangled that side, and punched into the offside shoulder. Found the bullet just in the edge of the meat after punching both shoulders. Deer managed to push himself about 5 yards on his nose before he rolled down the hill to end up in the brush.

And before guys start nattering about little bucks, I managed to pull a weighed 98lbs of deboned meat off of him.....
