I need to pin a couple of 5.56 AR mags to 5 rounds but don't have any ammo with me to measure how far the follower would be depressed and therefore where to fit the rivet. This would be for either Tapco or Mag pull composite mags. Can anyone provide a measurement? Thanks.

For my P-mags, the distance between the top of the feedlips to the middle of the rivet is 1.735". However, for the Armalite aluminum mag it's 1.965". So it does depend on the mag even though 0.230" would not accommodate another round anyway. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply! I really appreciate it. Can I ask you to check another measurement for me which should be more or less universal.... what is the distance from the inside of the lip to the flat portion on the top of the follower? This should be consistent for all mags but might be a little tricky to measure. If this is a pain then don't worry about it because the measurements you have given will be sufficient.

Thanks again. Steve

O.K., it took some effort to fit the calliper in there :)

For the P-mag, the distance from just inside the feedlip to the bottom of the cut out (not really flat in this mag) is 0.435". For the Armalite mag the measurement is easier and it's 0.460", a small difference. I hope this helps you. Keep in mind that you should calculate a bit of give so with full five rounds there will be some space left over for compression when you insert the loaded mag in the receiver.

Perfect! I really appreciate the assistance.

With a mag in hand it seems that if I measure from the top of the feed lips (top of the mag) and down the rear 1.735" that the follower will only be able to move about 1/4". Did you actually mean 2.735"? Or do I misunderstand what you are saying?

Oh, and I did get P-mags.

I just measured the rivet on my Pmags. Measured from the cutout at the back of the mag (in the rib at the back of the mag), to centre of the rivet is 2.133 inches

From the top of the feed lips to the rivet is about 2.573"

Found a photo on the Questar site that shows a PMag with the rivet in this precise location so I'm going for it.... thanks! Love this forum at times like this when guys are willing to help others solve a problem.

yes it is

Thanks for the feedback guys but I think this topic on the legalities of importing parts has been beat to death and there still isn't any consistency from the various official sites that I've visited. It seems that the various agencies involved are not all operating on the same page. That being said, my original question has been answered. Cheers.

he's gonna show up at customs in uniform with a military ID... how closely do you think he will be inspected? I know Ive never spent more that 3 minutes at a customs booth with LE ID
