.22lr sks

I've never heard of one before. Maybe you could rig up an insert to fire a 22 round, but it would never drive the action. You would have to pull the bolt back every round... but you'd have to do that anyway because I can't see it working except in single shot since the magazine would be useless for a 22 round. Then of course you'd use the magazine to hold the bolt open while you chambered a round... and still have to open it from the bottom slightly to get it closed again.

Way more trouble than it's worth. When surplus runs out, we will have to buy factory ammo or reload just like everyone else.
 
There is already several semi auto 22lr rifles out there that are designed to shoot .22lr and several that are in the 2-300 dollar range.

Why the hell would i want to shoot an sks if it could only shoot 22?

The whole point of an sks is the cheap surplus! When that runs out I dont think too many people will care about their sks anymore. Not worth rechambering or rebarelling at all!

Still got a pig stick on it so will use it as an ultimate lawn dart once the x39 dries up. :)
 
I think there is just too much bolt/carrier mass for .22lr to cycle it. A conversion probably wouldnt be any more difficult to produce than any other kits, but the design process and final cost would be alot. by the time surplus 7.62x39 dries up we will probably have some other cheap milsurps to play with. why would the SKS be any different than the other milsurps?
 
Oh and if the sks shoots .22 as accurately as an sks then why would anyone want one?

I guess you just really love your sks, but there is a million better platforms out there that are far lighter and far more accurate. Oh and alot of them already have .22lr conversions.

Personally I think the only good thing about an sks is the surplus ammo and it being so cheap.
 
With and insert it would be like the 22 FN C1A1 I shot years ago, cycled the action but was about as accurate as the gun you use to shoot the star out at the fair.

22 semi's are cheap and accurate, when the surp drys up just reload or hang it on the wall.
 
I guess i wasent as clear as i could have been i was thinking about a company making a rifle along the lines of the .22 style mp40 and stg 44. just a thought i have way to much time to think somedays
 
Will 7.62x39 run out in the next 50 years?

It's so prevalent the world over that we'll probably be buying up surplus produced today, 30-40 years from now. It might not be as cheap as it is today, since the sale of SKSs and surplus Russian ammo is essentially dumping materiels produced during the Cold War, but I wouldn't expect it to run out in our lifetime. This is of course barring any sort of import restriction that could get put in place, limiting supply..

I mean you can still find .303 and .30-06 surplus if you look hard enough.. I suspect niether of those were ever produced as extensively as 7.62x39.

Furthermore, going by prices in the states, you'll find that new mfg. ammo is not that much more expensive than surplus, if it is being produced in large enough quantites.
 
ya but once it gets through the gestapo border gremlin parade and raped half to death with fees and what not, dealers have to charge more for 7.62x39 than some .30-06 ammo. Locally, S&B 7.62x39 commercial SP is $22/20 rds. American Eagle 150 gr. .30-06 is $20/20 rds factor in shipping and even SFRC is pricey. We will need large orders of all the major US brands to get the price reasonable for what youre getting.

I'd be more worried about the $2500 bill than anything else. There is no law regarding how much ammo you can buy at one time.

In April last year I bought the last case of Yugo 8mm I can remember seeing, in June of last year the nice lady at The Shooting Edge in Calgary informed me that RUAG was no longer exporting GP11 and two weeks ago Milarm sent the B-in-law an e-mail telling us that the 1/2 skid of 7.62x25 we put a deposit on in December is no longer shipping.

Assume nothing and plan for the worst.
