Try 40 yrs ago. When the No.4s were found to be just not competitive enough, a lot of other rifles were tried. First the Model 1917s, Carl Gustavs, and Parker Hales, then the Sportcos and Musgraves took over. The tough cylindrical receivers with lots of lockup surface came next from England.
If you find a S&L barrel still has a throat and rifling, there is no reason to believe it can't still perform. They had a very good reputation in their time. Then for some reason they weren't available anymore.
